    Turbo char sui :(

Hi last night coming home from friends at 3 in the morning i opened her up along the private road home straight away i had 1.1bar boost and she pulled herself round to 150mph then the boost just started dropping off scarily fast and the car started slowing so i backed off and drove the last mile at 90mph. Once down to 30 mph i put her in 4th and nailed it and i got 0.4 bar boost and really laboured acceleration. So i chilled home. When i got home i thought i would have a look to see if i had blew a hose off and to my surprise the turbo hot side was cherry red/orange. Is this under fuelling??? , and also i think i might have burnt the turbo out . Let her cool for an hour and at first i could only get 0.5 bar, then it crept back up to 0.6 then 0.7 and finally 0.9 bar. Havnt been out in her today to give her a whirl but i thing maybe my noisy fuel pump isnt delivering the goods, or my FPR is on the way out. Can anyone shed light on this for me as i emmigrate in 4-5 weeks and the car goes in 3 weeks and it would be nice to have this problem solved before i go.

When in top gear and on full throttle my turbo often would glow red. So I doubt you have burnt your turbo out. As for the varying boost levels, I have no idea.

Might be worth changing your fuel pump and filter anyway before you go to oz graham.
Dunno if this is causing the problem though. Should it still be glowing even after a 'cool down' period after nailing it?

I will, i have changed the filter not long ago and the old one i think cained the fuel pump as on a flow test at work the old filter was well and truly blocked with minimal flow (@4 Bar i had about 0.35 litres a minute). So first things first, fuel pump. I had a quote of £65 for a bosch one a while ago from volksrange is this a good price. Also has anyone got the exact Bosch part number so i get the right connections

I was always led to believe the turbo glowing was a sign of the fuel being lean, Fuel pump price is good,,,I've never bought one for the S2 but did have to buy one for both previous coupes,,,,they set me back around £90 a time.
What about the lambda? IIRC you changed it not that far back? but these need changing every 60k or so,,,is that correct? would the lambda cause it to run lean?

Sorry Graham,,,not helping,,,I'm asking more questions than giving answers
Cheers for sorting bolts yesterday mate

No problem with the bolts, if theres any more you need, just giz a shout, i have a good deal going with local bolt suppliers for odd ball threads such as M12 fine (1.5 and 1.0 pitch) (RS2 origs)
My Lambda was changed about 7 month ago (6000 Miles), and i think lambda faults usually cause overfueling i think but correct me if i am wrong, my mams corsa last week was over fueling and the lambda was the cause. I will order up a new fuel pump tomorrow, never done one on these before, might do it at the farm. But woking it out the car had nearly 2 mile to cool down and at the end of this it was still glowing, so how hot did it actually get before i backed off.

I have seen a glowing turbo on mine, but that was with a dodgy oil cooler and some relatively high oil temperatures. I have since replaced the oil cooler and the oil stay a lot cooler now. Don't know if that would affect the turbo running temperature?

              Would it?

I thought a glowing turbo on the hot side was to be expected due to the very nature of turbo gas running temperatures....

              Cheers,

Graham, sounds very much like a fuel pump problem, not enough fuel, running lean and very high EGTs

The type of driving you were doing should never have made it glow like that. I would get a new fuel pump if i was you. And then maybe send the turbo off for inspection if it doesnt boost right.

Thanks all for the advice, i have had her out for a spin today and the very most i can now get in any gear is 0.9 bar wheras 2 days ago i was seeing 1.2 bar. I will get a new fuel pump, my oil temperatures got to about 100-110c (How crap are the incraments) with 2.1 bar at tickover oil pressure. And tonight i had to resist trying to give a Astra Turbo a kicking as i dont want to make her go pop. With such high temperatures is there any risk to pistons. She runs fine when not boosting and pulls from 1200-2400 (no boost) with no hesitation, but the turbo is getting louder by the week, i think it is heading south before i do . So does any one have a decent S2 turbo they would like to part with. I have the cash for a new one but i need the cash for some other car essentials before i go to OZ. ( or should i just tell the missus i didnt get much bonus this month and blow the lot :mischeif: ----thats if they give me much of a quarterly bonus--they keep robbing us.

Yes it can destroy engines. I have an EGT gauge on the dash for this reason. First thing to die tho is the exhaust valves BTDT!! It will be fine if driven gently for now. Sounds like the blower is fooked hard. Spend the dosh if you have it.

The chances are tho, that you havent done any long term damage to the rest of the engine, just the turbo. Swap the fuel pump, turbo and change the oil and filter

Hi Mark, cheers for the offer , is the turbo in decent nick, what sort of mileage is on it??. As i am debating whether to bite the bullet and go for a new one, its not the upgrade i would like (RS2) but beggars cant be choosers and to get her back on full chat would be nice. (8 days to payday ).
