    Engine won't start 3B

Firstly thought it was fuel pump related so have checked the pump all fine

Replaced fuel pump relay (as precaution)
Replaced Fuel Filter (removed unit was reletively new and clean)
I have a spark (HT lead test)
    Cleaned the MAF and connection
    Checked air intake for obstructions
Poured hot water on the cam cover (as described in other threads)

Oil light blinking, but oil level is fine (assume lack of oil pressure as engine not firing)

I haved checked the fuel rail and there seems to be plenty of pressure, however it still feels like fuel starvation, as the engine irregularly catches for a second or two but will not spring into life. (backfires every now and then)

Taken the afternoon off work to try and resolve but at a loss

    Any thoughts and ideas welcome

Is it the distriubitor gear??....The peice inside the origianl is plastic! It is possible to strip it, buy a brass one they are about on ebay etc.
Probably worth doing anyway, symptons are just like when my bro's went

If there is spark it can't be dizzy gear nor hall sender.

        Perhaps the fuel pressure reg?

This can be a nasty one.

          Definatley a spark

          1. She does fire for a second or so on the key
          2. HT lead to the head via srewdriver gives a spark

what about the timing it sounds as if it is out that causing the back fire firing at the wrong time with loads of fuel in it!

              Roter arm spins

To add to the confusion the roter arm does turn by hand, (engine off) have I now disturbed the timing ?

The rotor arm is normall fixed to the shaft pretty well, so either the gear drive is broken or your rotor arm is out of alignment and needs fixed on properly. Cant remember how the rotor arm is attached to the shaft also best to check if it's the correct rotor arm!

Can you remove the rotor arm and turn the shaft by hand with the engine switched off?

Looks like your dizzy has lost it's drive gear. The rotor arm should be bonded to the dizzy shaft, if it's loose it should fall off. Time to get that dizzy looked at. You'll also need to find the gear pieces if it has broken...

Well whatever gearing was left to generate the spark earlier is now well and truly gone,
In my fumbling around, the roter arm now no longer turns when turning the engine over, so no spark and i suppose no gear.

Do I need a new dissy or just a replacement gear (metal) and what about the hall sensor ? is that a serparate issue or related and requires replacing aswell

Just ger a new gear off ebay it's alot cheaper than a new dizzy! Theres loads of threads on the replacement of it, the only hard bit is breaking off a riveted plate which covers the bolt holding it on, i found a chisel and brut ignorance soon helped that off!

Ummh. It's quite unlikely that the gear was the original problem as if the hall signal and 62 degree pin signal from flywheel are not simultaneous there will be no spark!

I am assuming you mean -

If the origional problem was "car wont start" but did have a spark, then Hall sensor will need replacing - to cure the origional fault

No. I mean that originally the car would not start but you got spark and that means the dizzy was turning and hall is ok.
