Hi just bought my s2 and the running temp seems to be a couple of notches above 50. When i leave the car running to see what temp the fan comes on it kicks in at about 90. What should the running temp be? thanks for your help

If you like pissing petrol and money away then leave it alone...
The car is designed to run at ~90 celsius. It doesn't perform properly at 50 degrees as the ECU thinks its still warming up - and your MPG must be horrific.
Its about 15quid parts to change the thermostat and maybe 2 hours effort in the right hands.

Can we clarify this 'correct' running temperature. My present car and the previous S2 behaved the same way ( I owed the later from 18 months old, the car that is ! )
With A/C off in slow traffic 90oC or just below with fan on/off depending on ambient. On 'run' 3 notches below, not less unless very cold. The same postion, in fact as A/C on in slow traffic.
When I have had more recent audi loan cars (prior to stopping using main stealers) i.e. A3s A4s A6s they all raced to 90oC and stayed there.
So in summary 'on a run' do you see 90oC on temp or less as I do ?Alastair

Alistair - your thermostat sounds a tad slow as well. Mine used to behave like yours, but a new stat has it warming up quicker and sitting at 85-90 on a run. It creeps over 100, triggering fans etc as per the norm in heavy traffic.
The recent Audis run a more complex cooling system (with engine driven fans for one thing) and do have an uncanny ability to sit bang on 90C all day long regardless of traffic. The wifes A4 does this (until its stat failed a few months which I replaced and normal service was resumed).

Is this set in stone, i changed my stat when i changed my rad, it say rock between 85-90 when driving on A roads.Originally posted by S2central.netAlistair - your thermostat sounds a tad slow as well. In traffic if it creeps over 90C the fan automatically kicks in.
So is it over 90C or 100C that the fan should kick in at.Comment

Paul-Are you telling me that at 70mph on a cold day (it was about 8oC in Edinburgh this morning) your car runs at 85oC ? with new thermostat.
I thought that if they fail, they fail and the car stays 'cold' and gets there slowly. Since they either open or do not, if dead

My car, with no aux rad, a brand new main rad and new thermostat, is running at 1 notch over 90 in all driving conditions at the moment. In traffic, the low speed fan comes on regularly when it goes above that 1 notch over 90, and that does happen quite often, even with our relatively cool air temps at the moment.
If I switch aircon on, this brings it down to one notch below 90, as of course the fan is then running all the time (but my aircon has leaked all its coolant again so doesn't actually cool the inside of the car!).
Oil temperature also rises and settles to 90, which makes sense. Although if I give it a sustained period of booting it, that does of course rise...Ex S2 owner, now running around in an A4 Avant quattro...

Sounds identical too mine, except mine runs just below the 90 C, but then i don't have aircon.Originally posted by dan_bMy car, with no aux rad, a brand new main rad and new thermostat, is running at 1 notch over 90 in all driving conditions at the moment. But on the old one it say about 3 or 4 clicks below 90 on mway cruising.

What yours talks too !!!!! LOL Could not resist. Thanks Paul. I have just got the car back so it will wait.
Could be the final part of the fuel consumption jigsaw as many must be out there with knackered thermostatsAlastair

Paul,
I have changed my termostat twice in the last year and traffic temp stays around 90 degrees but motorway with clean air it goes down to 70.
I seem to think that probably my tems sensor is affected by the wind when going at speed.
Am I completely crazy or is it possible?

Or is it the wind chill factor on the multi function sensor as per this thread http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthr...ht=temp+sensorOriginally posted by S2central.netYes it does - with the new thermostat.
