    engine fooked

change my cams - (to 7A ones) and new timming belt yesterday

car started fine ran fine etc.

took it up th eroad on my way home - bang woodruff key snaps and engine dies,

this morning got another top pulley, timed up again, did a compression test

    no compression on cyl 1

    50 on 2 and 3

    30 on 4

    40 on 5

getting prices on valves/guides/head bolts/gasket etc.

    why has it happened tho?

wrong timming for 7A cams? is this different to 3B's?

stripping it down now trying to get it done for croft on saturday and dont want to put it all back together for the same thing to happen again

    any advice welcome

    thanks in advance

Will 7a cams are a straight fit BTDT, i suspect the woodruff key to be the sole cause.
Heard a few horror stories where it has failed, sometimes writing off the crank.
How fast were you going when this happened?
I suspect a few bent valves.
    Hope you get it sorted.

Sorry to hear this, before you put in the new woodruff key i would definately check the cam pulley wheel for cracks if you haven't bought a new one, seems to be becoming a common problem with age by the looks of things.

Thats bad news - how did you loosen and tighten the crank pulley ?
and the camshaft pulley actually ?

The woodruff key is only there for alignment - if it breaks off, it probably means the bolt has not been tightened correctly. Even if it was broken off during tightening, you would just have the wrong timing, it should still not have moved further to cause damage.

A-har... I'll be there for the track day too! Hope to see you there all fixed and sorted.

I'll be driving my bro's silver Mk2 Golf (5-door ). Don't laugh, 'cos if you do, you'll certainly get a fright - trust me . We ran it at Cadwell recently. Did 200 track miles and was only overtaken all day by 3 cars. 1) Radiacal, 2) Caterham with a hyabusa & 3) BMW which won the Khumo tyres championship last year . Can't wait!

well, 10 inlet valves are knackerd, 10 zaust valve guides so mine will not be appearing at croft tomorow, ordered a stainless steel head gasket and having all the valve stem seals etc replaced - lovely!!

will still be at croft on saturday in a blur RS2 so hopefully see a few of you up there!

                          regards
