do you have live at the coil, carbon brush in the dizzy cap?assuming its the old one that is,check all the engine earths as well,iv had similar problems with 16v golfs, turned out to be crappy earth causing problems..

other possibility is the woodruff key has sheared off the crank pulley causing timing problems

How did you check the position of the distributor and ensure that its aligned to #1 TDC ?

Did you check timing marks on flywheel and crank pulley also? Is there any signal leaving the coil?

                  Will:

first try moving the distributor a "hair" clockwise, try it, then a "hair" anti clockwise and try it again.
next thing is to ensure that the cam and crank timing are correct:

                  - does the "0" on the flywheel line up with the edge of the bell housing? Look into the port under the under the dist, near the crank breather.

And even the 62 degree pin on the flywheel may have been litterally fallen off. This is rare, but possible!

Take out the starter and inspect that the pin is there.
