Just a quick one folks. Recommended intervals between replacement? Notice in the service records of my '92 3B that it was last changed at 80k. It's now done 120k. Time for a replacement? Been quoted £164 at local VAG dealer. This the norm yeah? Cheers.

The timing belt is an 80k service interval.
£164 from dealer will be bare minimum in parts, as i priced them up to more around £200, labour to do this, at a dealer will likely take the bill to well beyond £700 given that most labour rates at the stealers are around £100 per hour!Ant

Actually it was £164 including parts, labour and VAT. Will investigate further..

I've moved this thread over to engine and turbo as its a very interesting thread (esp. at that price!!) and this forum is more appropriate for it.

Easy tiger.. Top Tip:
People whose surname is Toblerone should always take along an empty
'Toblerone' chocolate box when attending interviews
for office jobs. This would save your potential employer the expense of
having to make a name plaque for your desk, and therefore
increase your chances of getting the job.

I guess £164 was for belt change only.. ie: price of the belt and fitting it. No way.. I repeat.. no way will it be for other parts ie: pulley's, tensioners.. etc.. Will deffo get them checked now though after the horror stories I've been reading.Comment

Out of interest, does your car have aircon?
and is it ABY?
If yes to both, i'd be interested to see how they plan on doing it, as to knowledge there is no VAG tool to lock the crank if its an ABY with aircon.
Even then at £164 thats cheap cos they still have to get the headlights, bumper, cross-member etc off the car before you can even start, that price would only be 1 hours labour at best!Ant

It's a '92 3B - no aircon. It's actually a VW garage locally who have quoted this. They contacted Audi up the road who gave them a price, and they then got back to me. I did think it was cheap. I was quoted a ball park price of £250 from a local specialist.. Star Performace in Fife anybody?.. "£250 at least mate" after much chin rubbing over the phone. High maintenace cars these right enough eh?

The Audi stealer in Norwich charges £75/hour.
Still takes a good couple of hours for front end off+on, so at least £150 for that part of it!
My local (and careful) garage charges £25/hour, and everything seems to work properly after a job has been done...
