    Is this bad?

Just taking all the turbo pipework out to find this damn boost leak. On removing the rubber intercooler to pipe hose from the black metal intake pipe, I discovered black oil.

Is this a cause for concern?

It's oil from the breather system. Completely normal. Clean your intercooler while your're there. Might have loads of oil inside.

It seems, that you have not seen oil in the turbo hoses. I don't know if it's normal, but on high mileage turbos (at least kkk) it seems to be that mist of the oil is flowing from turbo through all pipework and intercooler everytime it makes boost.

Amount of oil you have in the photo is not unusual. Is it bad - I don't know. But it is not causing problems for loooong time - that's for sure, because I've seen too many long and good going cars to do that.

New engines have barely no oil inside the boost path. Older do. This is caused by piston blow by incresing as the mileage increases. Increased blow by means increased breathing which means increased amounts of oil in the pipes and in the IC.

        Relax.

Karlos have you checked the the hose going into the intercooler? easier to have a look from below, just an idea as this was the problem with mine when i got it, the o-ring was missing completely. Have you got access to a boost pressure kit?
Hope you had a good holiday by the way mate

I know the throttle body hose is a weak spot also. Check for perishing/split

Cheers Gav, holiday was superb, well needed!

No pressure test kit unfortunately, but I've taken the whole shebang to pieces, even removed the intercooler. Not sure where the O-ring should be but I never noticed one. I did notice that the link between the intercooler and the crossmember had some sealant on it, plus where the bottom hose fitted onto the intercooler looked a bit suspect.

Mark, excuse the divvy-ness, but where's the hose you mention m8?
