    RR and ABY

I've just bought a project with an ABY engine and 6-speed box, its come without an ecu and I have'nt run it . I would like to put this engine on one side for now, and at a later date rebuild a really good engine. For now, I would like to transplant a RR engine for which I have the ecu and loom, to get the car mobile. The question i'd like to ask is, what is the differance between the RR and the ABY and if I fit the RR loom will the ABY work with the RR loom and ecu at a later date. Any advise welcome.

You will be doing the work twice - I would advise you to get the ABY in their to start with.

I believe an RR is the last of the UR Quattro's built around 1989-1991. It essentially shares the same 20V Turbo engine as the 3B S2 IIRC.

It is better way to get ABY/AAN/ADU wiring loom and ECU. RR wiring loom is different, some connectors are lacking. You cannot use RR ECU without distributor and "normal" ignition coil. Also injectors are different, so mixture will not be perfect even if you will connect distributor, ingintion coil and stuff.

To connect ABY/AAN/ADU ecu to the RR loom, you will need to swap ECU connector pins. It's real PITA, also you can easily make mistake and fry your ECU to death.

One day I will do that (3B->AAN conversion), however I have pile of spare ECU's and expierence in burning them . Also Uu has expierence repairing ECU's .

So RECOMMENDED way, is to use ABY/ADU or in worst case AAN wiring loom (it will fit car electric system, and mounting points in differend way than ABY/ADU), and one of mentioned ECU's.

Instructions to convert 3B or RR to accept bolt on ABY ECU.
(Conversion will take about ~~4 hours work with propper tools and nerves)
(biggest time consuming problem is to get the pins loos at the Motronic 55 pin connector)

            See more here:

            and there the file:
            DIR_8n.XLS
*** SUMMARY *** The 3B wiring changes needed for 3B-->AAN,ABY,ADU
(1.5mm2 cables are ok for coil endstage steering)

If you can get a complete AAN or ABY loom, use it !

I especially agree with the part about nerves ... Mine are way too weak to do it in 4 hours
