    Running Problems

    Hi,
    I have a 92 3B with a home fry.

The car stopped on the way home, which would then start and run for a few seconds and then stall. After about 5 minutes the car would idle (roughly) and if the accelerator is pressed gently the car will rev up to 5000 ish rpm but if you floor it will not rev and nearly dies - and you get a strong smell of petrol - anyone got any ideas please??

Could be a dirty MAF or contacts. When was the last time it was cleaned?

      Thanks for the reply.
I have never cleaned the MAF, how would you do it - what do you mean by contacts - rotor arm etc?

The MAF contacts, i.e. where it plugs into the MAF. Best way is to remove the MAF from the Airbox and hose and take off the two mesh screens on either end. I usually use a solvent cleaner, as long as it doesn't leave a white residue, and spray the small wire and surroundings inside, and give it a good blast out till it looks nice and clean.
Leave to dry on its own and replace back on the car.

Others will have their way of doing it but this way works for me and i haven't had any probs.

        Cheers,

        Chris

If its stinking of fuel you might have a leaking fuel line / pressure regulator or injector seal. Check all of those before condemning a MAF. Tried replacing a MAF with anyone elses. What fault codes are showing ?

Oh of course you might just have an air leak...

The car is booked in for Fri - so they should be able to reveal any fault codes. I doubt it is an air leak as I replaced all the small bore hoses around the engine bay and the accordion hose etc last year, but i will check them.
At idle the needle on the boost gauge sits in the same position as it always has - I presume this is a good thing?
I don't know anyone locally with an S2 - anyone in the Derby area??
              Where is the pressure regulator?
Is a leaky injector seal easy to cure / spot?
Where do the fuel lines run?

              Sorry for all the questions.

              Thanks

              Nick

Has one of the spark plugs come lose? In tracking down my running problems (also with a chipped 3B), one of the things I did was to check the sparkies and was a bit alarmed to find 3 of the 5 were not exactly what you'd call "tight".

I have cleaned the MAF and connections.
                    Replaced the rotor arm
                    Replaced the plugs
Went to buy a fuel pressure gauge from the main dealer - £71 and would have to wait 7-10 days I will call VAG parts in the moning.
I did notice that when I turn the ignition on I can hear the fuel pump prime the system (I think) this is a lot louder than it used to be - I have never noticed it before could this be a symptom?
                    Thanks

I forgot to mention the smell of petrol does not come from the engine bay - more from the back end.
The car still runs like c**p

I live in Heanor (not too far from you) If you want you can try my MAF and see if that solves your problems.

I also have a litre of IPA (used for cleaning MAFs) that I bought to clean my MAF. Didnt use it in the end as when I took it off it was clean.

Drop me a pm if you wanna do this.

                            Cheers

Off topic, but where do you connect that? Is that price complete with all onnections needed? I'm interrested in measuring my fuel pressure too..
