  • Piston Cooling Canals

Hi, i read somewhere that there is been used in racing turbo engings cooling canals with oil!

The piston has an oil channel inside!
Each time the piston goes to the lowest position the hot oil comes out and the coller gets in!
Does someone knows more about this?

It says: The piston have an 45cml oilsea inside! The piston is cooling through fresh oil that pushes the hot oil outside the oil channel with an 3.3mm oil injector!

They say this cooling system is much more effective than oil Spray systems!
        And the questions are:

        1. Can this system be adapted in the audi engines with custom made pistons?
        2. Can Piston manufacturers (JE ect) make pistons with oil channel or must they be casting pistons only?

Not sure about the pistons though.

I think these are stock Oil sprayers in the audi 2.2 Turbo and diesel engines!

I mean, can there be oil injectors to use with oil channel pistons in an audi engine?

I think the pistons would be heavier as a result. I wonder how much, and what advantage there is with this system. I suspect they would be more expensive to produce too.

The new 130 150 and 160 1.9 pd tdi ve/audi engines have hollow pistons with the oil jet. Not just a oil just like the old tdi,s and 20VT but a oil "pocket" like you describe. But then the new diesels are under huge thermal and compressive stress compared to even the highest tunned 20VT. Dont think it would be needed on a 20VT if the fueling was right. Very nice kit!

It will be needed not to run so rich on Full throttle! Less knocking, smaller intercoolers, ect ect

                          Answer from JE pistons:

No problem...A set of 5 custom JE's for Audi with Oil Channels is $825
                          with wrist pins and rings.
Add $245 for Ceramic Coated Crowns and Moly coated Skirts and insides.

Another Wuestion that comes is: What oil injectors to use?

Another thought is: With pistons like these the oil must go very qick hot, so maybe a very big oil cooler is needed, and may for the few who can a Drysump system with 8-10 liters oil!!!

So people what is your opinion on these kind of pistons? Anyone heard of someone using them?

Have also find this picture on this site http://emporace.com/ but i cant understand what he says! He has JE pistons they look so:
