    S2 Performance Questions

Recently got an S2 Avant which I'm endeavouring to get right b4 modding. I've just added a 2.5" Catless pipe (as open as sociable) but otherwise its standard. I've replaced lambda (& have a idle controller on the shelf next to me) and it seems to be OK except under warm start. I've a multifunction and afterun sensor coming in the post...and a diags reader (where's the port for this on an avant s2?). Hoping the solutions there one way or another. Is there anything else obvious (runs great, unless its sat for 30mins then been restarted, at which point it stalls and winges for about 20mins).

Clutch & foot willing its doing consistent 6.x secs to 60, but it struggles to pass 130mph. Not had it on a dyno, but (a good) G sensor reckons its putting down around 160bhp peak.

    Few questions..

    1. What does a standard (ABY S2 Avant) develop at the wheels (I mean the unadjusted figure no-one ever tells you!)..and where should it top out/get ropey)

    2. Whats the practical difference between the two ecu mods talked about here? I know there's a load of stuff on this, but it would be good if someone could point me at the critical threads.

    3. I'm wondering if its worth the cash for modding, when spoofing the temp sender and adding a boost controller would probs make it lively enough. Any caveats about such home brew solutions? Is anyone using either mod? mostly its the boost controller I'm thinking about and accleration rather than peak (once its normal again) I'm looking for.

    Thanks,
    Simon

No. No. No. No. No! That's not the way forward.

130 tops is no good though - You will have to sort that out, the Dark Side requires off the clock performance

Sounds as if all is not well if it will only do 130mph, but after you've got that sorted go for a 'Homefry' chip conversion. My brothers car and Bry's are virtual twins excepts Bry's has a Homefry. The difference is night and day!! The speed that it will go from 80-130mph ( even in 6th ) is enough to make a grown man giggle!! All this in a proven package for only £250, you cannot go wrong.

Yes, a vote for the homefry too. Brakes and suspension should be first on the list as is well documented in various threads. Once i had my Movits the difference was dramatic.

If the car isn't making 130mph in stock form then there is sure a problem somewhere. Probably an air leak that is causing loss of boost pressure. If you can temporarily fit a boost guage, let me know what boost you see at full throttle in 4th or higher from 30mph. You should be seeing approx 1.1. to 1.2 bar circa 4000-4500rpm on stock chips.

You might be carrying other faults such as loose spark plugs or dodgy Motronic sensor faults which can result in reduced performance (eg the MAF, TPS, WGFV or temp sensors). Have a look at http://s2central.net and scour the technical pages for info on how to pull fault codes. Be aware though that not all system faults raise a fault code. Of course a worn out turbo will also struggle to make maximum boost.

Please don't dabble with boost controllers and fudged temp sensors on the S2 - it is NOT the way forward. I see some of the lads here have already mentioned the home grown remap available from myself. This retains all Motronic failsafe mechanisms, factory diagnostics but has more aggressive timing and fuelling to go along with increased boost levels (Max 1.4bar) that give the S2 a lot more edge. You'll find the car much more torquey in the mid range and a lot more oomf at full throttle. Homefried cars have been dyno'd at 270-280bhp and 410-430Nm. Fuel consumption is also slightly better (if you can go easy with the loud pedal).

If you're talking about VAGCOM then the leads plug into connectors found in the fuse box.

Hope you get everything sorted. Oh, and get a homefry! They're Grrrrrrreat! or is that Frosties?

                  I'm in West Lancs.

                  ..on the other stuff.

I'll have replaced most of the common problem sensors, already done plugs, brakes (& new fuel lines, exhaust, couple of oil changes, speedo replacement etc). No obvious boost leaks, putting a guage on this week when my oppo sticks on the new sensors/ISV. Hopefully it'll cheer up at that point. Lot of little bits of work done, but for 3K I'm not complaining

The new exhaust/lack of cats has made a suprising amount difference. Will stick the OB Wan diags thing on it tomorrow, though its a Jarg one of eBay so may be hopeless... I haven't tested it yet.

                  Thanks

                    Why was it sooo cheap?

Maroon. Lots of work needed I suppose, its very ugly with stone chips etc.

Spent almost £700 so far, but I'm not paying for work just parts and got a deal on the exhaust, and of course I still may have probs with engine. Also noticed power assist is playing up, or at least the resevior isn't working..no steering under stall at all.
