    Boot Seal

I seem to be getting water in my left side rear of my boot.

I think it's the main boot seal that is the problem.

Strangely, the drainage holes on the seal are facing into the boot, not out of... Is this right, or should they (as I would expect) be facing out?

    Thoughts please...

    Hope you can help.

    Thanks, JB

Just double check that it is the boot seal, the S2/Coupe has a problem with the rear light clusters leaking. If it is this you just need the special 3m stuff and bobs your uncle

Yeah, I've just replaced the seal on the right cluster, but on this one, I got Dad to hose the car whilst I observed inside... The water was dripping from the black plastic trim on the rear (just below the funnt button pushy-screw thing), and I could see the water coming down the inside of the boot seal...

Are these drainage holes meant to be towards teh inside or not?

If you're talking about the small holes in the rubber seal strip itself, they're not actually for draining - they're there so that when the rubber is squashed down, the air inside the tube section can be squeezed out.

If the holes were on the outside, then there would be the risk of water getting into the hollow section (which it certainly shouldnt).

I've had my rear washer leaking water inside and also the tail lights and plate holder - but never yet had a leak from the seal / tailgate itself (and I'm now on my 3rd coupe!). Can you share a picture of where its been leaking from?

My tailgate fills with water, so it overflows into the boot, or on to my back seat when I open it. I'm not sure how it gets in there.

yep, mine leaks on the right side either through the seal or via the light cluster - really pi**es me off and reminds me about the S2 and autumn/winter ownership, its always the job i forget to do in 75degrees in the summer

Those airholes do 'vent' on the bootside btw.....

              Thanks folks.

Yeah, my right light cluster was full of water when I replaced the seal. Think the left one is ok though.

I went to take pictures of the water coming in down the inside of the boot seal...
But first, I lifted the seal, and didn't set it down fully. After having done that, No water came in. So I'm thinking that maybe I have the wrong seal part?? Is that possible?

I intend to make some sort of spacer so that the boot seal sits higher on the left side.

That sound like a good plan?

(Will post pics when I can...)

Well, my the holes in my seal are on the inside, but the hollow section still fills with water...

                Any ideas?

The rebound buffers on the coupe are adjustable and can be re-set. I would suggest following the excellent advice on www.20v.org as repeated here:

                    Rear Hatch Squeak
Symptoms: Squeaks emanating from rear hatch while driving over bumpy roads.
This is caused by a loose fit between the hatch and the body. Adjustment of the plastic/rubber posts on each side of the hatch usually clears up the problem, which may return after several months of slamming the hatch shut.
Loosen threaded pin (2) with a 4mm Allen key (hex key).
Pull detent slide (1) out by approximately 3mm.
Carefully close the tailgate (without slamming it), until the lock engages audibly.
Open the tailgate and pull detent slide (1) out by two notches.
Tighten threaded pin (2) to 1.7 Nm.
Audi issued a TSB on this that recommends replacement of the adjustable stoppers on each side of the hatch and the striker plate with improved versions, but I don't have any info from anyone who's done this. Here is a list of P/Ns:
                    Adjustable body stop 895 827 347 & 348 - Goes on body, each side
Adjustable asymmetrical rubber stop 895 827 499 & 500 - Goes on hatch, each side
Striker Plate 895 827 507 - Goes in latch area.

I bet the seal is still not good on the rear lights tho'

I can't remember what the 3M version is. Effectively the same stuff from Teroson (Loctite) is Terostat-VII:

This can be bought from some Motor Factors (Brown Brothers near me had it), and I'm told VAGParts sell it.

If you're having trouble tracking it down, Teroson themselves can be very helpful. I don't have their number to hand, but Loctite/Teroson in the UK are based in Hemel Hempstead and I guess are in the phone book.

                        NCT the above etc.

                        Ck.
Shocked, exhausted, hosed, bushed, dumped, chipped, mounted, filtered, gauged, packed, intermittantly wiped and braked. I mean broken. Now, about the car...

See the write up I did on re-sealing the light clusters here as it also contains a pic of sealant and the Audi part number, although I managed to get a free off cut from a local body shop.
