I thought that was normal. A few people I have seen do the same.

The stop for the boot probably needs adjusting since it is pressing against the catch stopping the spring releasing it

Peel the carpet back in the boot, and you will see the rod linking the lock to the catch, at one end of the rod it is threaded and goes into a plastic top hat configuration, IIRC you push in the center part of the top hat and slide the rod in a MM or so, then re pop the holding mechanism into place and try it again, they stretch and wear with age and the stroke on the worn part to long to actuate the catch. This will cure it, i have exactly the same problem on my last coupe and 2 Golfs. Also if the top hat arrangement looks brittle/fragile, another way is to unhook the other end of the rod and screw it into the top hat, this has the same effect as above by shortening the rod and removing the slack.
