Today i spoke to two local garages about respraying the avant. Really trying to get through to them that the car needs to be done `properly and carefully` and was met with a `yeh pop it down and we can blow it over next week if we have time` attitude. Can anyone recomend somewhere in the south of england where i can be assured of a quality job at a decent price ? anyone on here got a paint shop ? tips advice ?

Cars theyve done:-
Pete McGinleys Mk4 - won pretty much every trophy going....

Simon Thripp's Mk3 Vr

to name but a few...
I know Simons car was painted, bumpers smoothed, rear arches pulled so that they still retain the stock lines - loads of work! (new rear glass was fitted as they shattered when they were pulled), two new genuine front wings, wheel centres colour coded and loads of other subtle touches for approx 1600 quid...beat that.Last edited by blown_vr6; 7 February 2007, 11:25.'If you ain't broke it you ain't trying hard enough'

I too am having the same problem selecting a body shop to spray my avant in the Reading area. So far I have been to number and have left without even bothering to ask for a quote - not impressed with either their attitude or the examples of their work.
Yesterday on the off chance I took a trip out to a body shop near to me. It a four man operation the work shop was clean and tidy, gave me a tour of their facilities and carried out a detailed inspection of my car and discussed various options with me. There were also a number of classic cars in the shop for bare metal resprays (always a good sign IMHO).
Your problem will be the same as mine - if you want a quality job it's going to cost. The majority of which is in the labour. Do ask what paint they will be using though.
I am looking at doing a lot of the stirp down and re-fitting myself. To do the job properley you will need to have all glass (barring the 4 doors) removed. These are bonded in. I have received Quotes for around £240 for this alone. All trim will also have to come off and most you will not be able or want to put back on.Comment

You know the £2k job for £800
Seriously have a look at Pete s (blown vr6) post with the pics, admittedly £1600 is well cheap for that work but mines a nice straight forward`laser red`with loads of laquer please. Just had another quote through, £1300 if it goes to them minus the trim and glass and i refit it all or £250 more if they do it. Last car i had repainted was, blimey six or seven years ago, lhasa mk1 Golf GTI cost me £400 all in. Thought about £1k would be the going rate now, but it seems £1500 is there or there abouts. Unless anyone knows different.

There is a place in southampton that a friend went to with his V6 80 and was really please. They do lots of work for audi and the guy that runs it is a audi nut himself.
Alan i will indeva to try and get there name or number for you.
Perl white is going to be a nightmare for any one, the rubber trims on my coupe have been done three times now by a porsche specailist and i am still not 100% happy.

I'd always recommend the boys at Reflex. Having seen the attention to detail on Matt's Mk3 and Mk4 I'd say you'd struggle to get a better job. Plus, they're genuine enthusiasts, and nice people. As Pete said - it's worth travelling to take it somewhere good.
