How hard of a hit can it take before cracking or shattering? Will it bend a little in a minor parking lot
bang or will the mounting brackets deflect ? Can a cracked one be plastic welded or will a new bumper be needed?
Well if it helps, Ive just had a minor ding in mine, reverse parking at around 5 - 10 mph and I didnt see a pole used to display a parking limitation sign on the edge of the curb Hit the pole about a quarter in from the end of the bumper and "bruised" rather than cracked or split anything.
What it did do was sheer off the mounting bracket that secures the edge of the bumper to the inner wheel arch, where the torx headed bolts are. Happily I can get a replacement for around £6 from the stealers and this isnt actually part of the bumper. Fortunately I have a replacement bumper waiting to go on so thats Saturdays task!!
Dont know if this helps mate but I can take pics if it helps of the damage! Not that I massively want everyone to see what a berk Ive been!
cheers
Paul

Pictures taken today whilst changing Paul's rear bumper.
His passenger side bracket had snapped clean through after his close meeting with that post.
The bracket is quite thick plastic, but very brittle. Not sure if thats just with age though. Bracket part numbers for reference are 895 809 555 left and 895 809 556 right.
The bumper itself faired a bit better, not cracked or anything, just lost some paint on the side where it meets the wheel arch, and crazed the paint where it actually hit the post.
Shoot me a PM with an email addy if you want the full size pictures.
