    replacing window motor cables

Attempted to replace my complete door frame mechanism yesterday with a second hand one to find the frame was a different shape.

i then tried to swap over the cables and motor from the new one into my frame !!!!! Big mistake as soon as i removed the cables they un wound inside the motor now ive operated the window with the cables un wound there now kinked and knackered.

Can you buy new cables and how do you fit them ???

no replys so far on any other audi forum so i guess this is a bit of a dull point !

Yes you can, it's not the easiest job buy any means but it can be done. The window glass needs to be removed so that you can separate the motor from the cable winder and to route the cables.

If you are going to go down this route my best advice is to mark the 3 positions of the glass edges in relation to the regulator. That way you stand a chance of having the glass properly aligned when you come to adjust the regulator in the door shell.
Ensuring the glass is properly aligned takes a lot of the pain out of this job. I can't emphasise this point enough.

I bought a new cable drive a few weeks ago and I managed to kink the cable and render it useless too. In the end I elected to buy a new regulator as I didn't want any more hassle with it.

As for fitting, i'm sure this has been covered on the this forum.

Hope this is of some help to you.

Where can i get them for 30 quid ?? trouble is theres 2 different frames every second hand one i buy is the wrong one.

On ebay they sell universal throttle cables with solder on nipples , so im gonna give them a go as there £7 each. Not losing a lot there.

How do i know how many times to coil the cable round the nylon roller ??

Really appreciate the help, no one else has replied on other audi forums.

Also are these windows anti trap because now ive taken it apart is there any way to time the motor up so it knows when the glass has reached the top

You'd be wasting your time and money trying this. Solder will NOT hold under the forces excerted upon the stop ferrules. They need to be swaged on under high pressure.

Wind the longer cable around the pulley grooves once until it meets the shorter cable. You'll probably need to pull one cable end so that you can get the stop ferrules to meet up to the window clamp.

The triangular rubber stop that meets the A pillar will take care of that.

Thats the trouble i had was getting the ferrules to meet the clamp, then i knackered the cables. Surely the window has to be in a set position according to the amount of times you need to wind the cables.

The cables should be fitted with the clamp at the very bottom of the regulator.

Not in my experience, separate the cog from the motor worm drive and align the 3 detents in between the rubber stops. Then drop the motor in.

Retail price is £51.61 + VAT for the cable drive assembly. If you're anywhere near the Glasgow area I can do it for you.

So the short cable goes round once then the longer wraps all the way down the roller. is this right.

Ill probably be asking more questions when i get the cables

This is how I started if I remember correctly. If the long cable doesn't reach the clamp, you can unwind it a little and the short cable will be wound onto the cable by the same amount to compensate.

It's not the easiest thing to explain, and there is an element of trial and error too which can be a little frustrating at times as I'm sure you'll agree.
