    Wing mirror glass

Anyone got any BTDT's on replacing these, without breaking the old ones???
I tried years ago on my cq20v and broke both

My drivers side on the S2 packed up heating a while back, and now the passenger side has gone too. Both have got brown delamination just starting to show on the very edges.
So I've bought two new fancy blindspot versions with the slight blue tint from the boys at vagparts.
Just want to be able to get the old ones out and keep as spares.
Yes, I know , but I hate breaking stuff.

    TIA,
    Jas..

I got my drivers side one out in one piece with 2 small screwdrivers.
I wrapped a load of electrical tape round the shaft of the screwdrivers and with one either side gently prized them out, it might be worth having an additional pair of hands to catch the mirror as they do pop out of the housings but I managed on my own easily enough with no damage.
As I said though they do take a bit of force to get out (but no more than it takes to push the new ones back into the clips) and they come out quite suddenly once they are free so go carefully and everything should be fine

Jas rotate glass as you pull on it, there are open key ways on motor assembly.
Near side anti clock, off side clock. Broke a couple myself in the past untill local VAG man gave me this tip.

The way I've seen it done before is to edge a wallpaper scraper under the glass at the bottom and gently push down on the handle to to lift it out. The wide blade gives an even amount of pressure across the edge of the glass to stop it splitting.

Keep you other hand on the glass while doing this so that it doesn't drop to the ground.

              Thanks chaps, very much appreciated.

One last question if I may, how do you turn it when it's recessed into the wing mirror housing? I believe you can remove the black trim piece that encircles the mirror housing, does this give better turning ability?
Or is it a case of tilting the mirror and trying it that way?

Thanks again, now just need for it to stop bloody snowing well, heavy sleet FFS! .

I think you adjust the mirror first to point fully upwards and then possibly get it to point to the left or right depending on what side you are doing. I'll try to find the factory guide for you.

                  Removing

                  CAUTION!

Wear protective gloves to prevent injury if glass breaks.

Hold glass to prevent falling out.

tape upper/lower edge of mirror housing

using tool 80-200, pry mirror glass off at bottom 1 and top 2

                  hold mirror, unplug electrical connector

fit mirror onto guide pins (arrow )

                    press into mirror housing

                    check mirror for proper function

Jas your gonna need a wooly hat, gloves, & rain coat then.
The tirm can be removed but you need the glass out first.
Tilt glass down i think that gives most room then push one corner, pull the other & ease it outward, hmmm a liitle difficult to explain but hope you get the jist.

Done, without breaking the old ones too
Instead of the brute force route I used years ago, this time I took it easy.
Turned the mirror inwards as far as it would go, then used a trim lever tool to get inside and lift a couple of the clips that hold the plastic plate the glass is stuck to, to the motor itself, then it just popped off easy as that.
Unhook the two spade terminals, connect to new mirror and clip it back on, being careful to push in the centre of the glass as it's really quite thin. There's two pins that need to align with two holes on the motor.

Both new mirrors are 893 857 535G, blind spot and blue tinted. £49.97 each inclusive of VAT, then shipping of a couple of quid from vagparts.

                          Old mirrors are;
                          Drivers side - 893 857 535F, flat, blue tinted,
                          Passenger side - 893 857 536D, convex, blue tinted.

The delamination that probably killed the heating.

                          Both old mirrors intact.

Nice work Jas, thanks for sharing your how to experience. I must remember that for future reference. What advantage(s) does the blue tint and convex lens have?

I probably shouldn't ask as I'll be wanting a set for myself.

The convex one was what came off the passenger side. Really quite bugged me as it makes the traffic behind seem a lot further away than it really is.
As they aren't handed, I've used two 535G's, they are both flat, but have the added blind spot bit.
I had non tinted ones on my old 2.3e Coupe, it maybe just a placebo but the blue tint ones seem to not dazzle as much when the sun is behind and low in the sky.
Look a bit cooler if nothing else
