    glass sunroof

Anyone know if the glass sunroof will fit into the same position as a steel version? ie are the mountings etc the same?

I'd check the sizes of the sunroofs first off as i've just did this on a different type of car got both out to find the glass one was different so had to go get a different glass one.

Think jas11n might just have one of them to check.

The frames are different. If you have the correct frame I would think they are drop in replacement. I can't confirm this though. The gaskets for each are the same length which suggests that the surface area of the panels are identical.

Oh well if it involves changing frames that idea can disapear.Im not that fussed.Removing the roof lining was quite an unpleasant experience when i did one a couple of months back.Infact i would say it was more awkard than doing a matrix!

Lol I might be removing mine and thats not inspiring me with confidence atm.

Check the sunroof you might be lucky and do what I could have done and undo 4x screws to remove the glass part and swap over.

Funny you should ask i tried this last weekend, i have a glass sunroof complete however the metal frame was damaged during shipping. The metal frame is the same for both versions, same part number etc so you can bolt the glass panel into a regular sunroof frame. The rubber seal around the edge is also different for each panel.

Problem area is with the slide back cover. On the regular sunroof the cloth trim clips onto the roof panel so it moves with the panel when the sunroof is opened, where as with the glass sunroof it is separate so you can slide it back with the sunroof in the closed position. From looking at the two frames side by side you can remove the plastic guide and trim panel and fit them into the old frame.

I ran into a problem with mine as the glass panel had started to separate from its metal backing, as soon as i fix that i will finish off the install and take a few pics.

It is possible however having the complete assembly is preferable as there is only a handful of bolts holding it in the car. You will still need to remove the headlining and frame from the car to swap over the plastic guide so having a complete unit would be a lot less work.

Mark, when I checked the good book, the frame part numbers where different. Are you sure they are the same?

Yep, there is a part number is stamped on the section the motor bolts to. I can understand Audi listing them as being different as they will only sell a complete frame unit. However when you look at them side by side you can see the metal frame is the same shape, only difference is the bits of plastic trim stuck onto them.

In other words Audi never expected anybody to dismantle the frames and swap the parts over.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but am i reading this right that its possible to fit a glass sunroof into the framework of the existing metal sunroof, only having to glue on some plastic trims for the sliding cover? reason i ask is the clips are broken on my sunroof trim, so rather than pay the dealers £120+ for a new trim, id much rather have a glass one! Would a glass sunroof from an a4 fit?

Oh and this is all to go into an avant btw.

                      cheers
