Tailgate latch stuck

Driving back from the garage yesterday, noticed the rear interior light coming on so stopped to make sure the tailgate latch was ok, but rather than just closing the damn boot I poked about at the latch which is now stuck in the closed position.
I've tried poking about at it some more but sadly in this instance my poking skills aren't helping...

Found some old posts with links to adjusting the lock, but can't find anything about the actual latch on the tailgate.

Ok, by a combination of more latch-poking and some lock-twiddling, the catch finally released. So the boot is now closed, but isn't really in the mood for opening now...
The lock is slow to return once pushed in so may be a problem there.
