    windscreen chip/crack

I have spotted an annoying chip with a small 1cm crack on my windscreen. On contacting Autoglass they said the screen willl need to replaced which is annoying but fair enough, insurance makes it pretty cheap without affecting NCB. However Autoglass are not sure which screen my car needs . Apparently in 1988 Audi changed they way the fixed the screen to the car, in a nut shell from glue to nuts and bolts or vis vera, i forget! anyways, can anyone tell me how my screen is attached so I can then let Autoglass know which one I need. I hope the pics help. and the car was registered 24/11/88. thanks in advance nic

It should be rivets, you can open the door and pull pack the rubber seal at the A pillar to confirm this.

ummm, just pulled back the plastic trim on the A frame and there doesnt appear to be any rivets all the way down, looks very much like it has just been sealed on??!?

Not the plastic trim, the rubber seal that the edges of the glass meets to form a seal. I don't think you need to remove the plastic to do this.

yea they cut it off with a tool and bond the new one in.
heres a pic of the side covers removed
Just make sure they seal up the covers and put all the rivets back in or you will have leaky footwells btdt

Funny how Autoglass advertize that they can fix chips , and yet all I have ever seen from their repairs is a professional lash -up ! I repair windsreens for a living and don't get commission for selling a windscreen ! So a good repair is in my best interest ! Are you in the south ???? If so I will do a repair for you and if your not happy I won't charge you ! Beat that Autoglass ! Kind regards Klausy

I had mine replaced today by autoglass.

The guy really seemed to know his stuff actually and has been back several times because he was only prepared to fit the screen when he had anything to hand, new rivets, screen, plastic and rubber trims, which he had to get "head office" to order on multiple occasions.

The screen really made a mess when it came out because the screen had de-laminated on the corner. Not nice to see shards of glass splitting all over the body work and interior
