Look for an Arbeitsanweisung ticket. It's a green/white tractor feed paper slip with the chassis number, date and some option codes printed on it. There should be one stuck to the back of the dash, and I'm sure I've seen others around the car.
Obviously this will tell you the identity of the component the ticket is stuck to, but it should tie up with other info you have. Date stamps around the car, for example.

I agree with stu, i've seen that bit of paper a few times, I changed the dash in my avant for a mint one and that was on the back of it

Neither. Look behind the central vent under the top of the dash, in the middle.

There's also the data sticker in the boot. It shows the chassis number along with engine, gearbox codes, option codes and paint code.
Located behind the plastic bin in the cubby hole of the boot (Coupe)
