    winscreen woes

    hi all

my coupe is in at autoglass following my complaint. i have asked following the original fitment for a audi screen which it now has but apparently the side trims, the bits of body that run up the side of the window still wont go back properly.

im no body man so can you please enlighten me as to why its so difficult to get these back if anybody knows.

also i feel this may need to be escalated again if i get no result. can somebody please send me some pics of how the trims meet the body. it would be much appreciated.

    cheers

I recently refitted mine, they had been fitted poorly by National windscreens who had changed the screen for a previous owner. The problem I had was too much sealant had been used on the A posts causing the screen to sit a little high, this makes it very hard to get the post trims back on. I cracked the corner's of my screen in the end but did at least get the trim to fit properly, I was less than than pleased by this sub optimal outcome. I'm going to fit a new screen myself unless someone can guarantee their not going to **** it up, though this can wait till I get the car painted.

There some photos on my project thread see post 85, http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthr...t=39279&page=6

Basically there's a small lug riveted to the top of the A post that the trim locates on, and makes it meet the roof flush.

better had. its been 2 days so far in the autoglass fitting centre following fitting in the car park here.

looks like i was right. the pilkington glass windows are not quite the same shape as factory. ask for factory, pray you dont need one.

That's very useful to know, I take it screen replacement company's use pattern units, I bet factory ones don't come cheap.

no they are not cheap. the shape of the first window left uneven top line on the window. it was fairly flush towards the edges but in the middle about 1/2 inch of the recess visible. seal sat at varying levels of squashedness (great terminology im sure)

i was told by the autoglas that they agree with my presumption but they will as they wont want to pay for the first job.

usual audi. think a guy made it putting green sand in a vice and then had it delivered by a flock of migratory birds going the wrong way. 10 weeks there or there abouts. it took pride of place on its own rack in the centre so i presume megamoney

                well progress has been made.

the car was left until yesterday.

a guy called simon from autoglass fitted the window properly. he had soem trouble with the side pieces as thye had been bent a little by previous attempts but im happy with it now. he has done many he said a few years back and it showed as it went in in 4 hours finished.

not sure if he was from my local oldham branch but if he was it would have been a lot easier to use him first time round.

so i can say ask for simon from oldham branch if you use autoglass.

Autoglass replaced mine a while back but i think i was lucky because the guy had done audi coupe's before and was clearly experienced.

Needless to say he wanted to go for a spin when he was done

Glad you got a satisfactory job done in the end. Those A post trims are a right PITA, to stand any chance of get them right the screen needs to be perfectly fitted. I'm seriously considering doing mine myself come respray time.

fit is now good. think its the leaning on the trims by previous fitter that has meant a tiny gap. hardly visible.

like i said simon was a good fitter. did the job on his first attempt.

plonked it straight back in the garage and got back in the rover. im not finding the audi fun at the moment.

                          You guys thinks that's bad....

here in the States, the glass is listed NLA! The ones that are available are aftermarket knock-offs or very old stock which are brittle and at times delaminated. It's also a roll of the dice to get an outfit or installer who knows his way around a Coupe.
AND even if you do find someone willing to make an attempt at installing it....the end result would bring tears to your eyes.

glass was ordered from audi. 10-12 weeks.

the pattern part glass was not as good. it has visible shape differences at the top. also the tint is not as deep again visible to anybody in the know.

id expect, no offence, for a US pattern parts to be even worse. direct fit usually requires a machine shop on US parts from my experience.

                              Windscreen

recently had a new windscreen fitted by Autoglass.
                              They did a great job.
On the RS2 it has a graduated green sun band on the top to prevent dazzle.
Recommend this one as i think only the Audi ones have it judging by what the guy was saying.
