  • sandblast the body or not?

I have restart working at my car. I have dismantled everything and now i want to send the body at sandblasting... will cost here aprox 400 pounds. But some friends of mine told me that will not be good for the chassis and better to repair only the rusted spots in place.
    What you think?
    Thank You!
    All the best!

swings and roudabouts with blasting vs acid dip.
With blasting it is very easy to distory panels or blow through due to very high pressures commercial blasters run at (to get the job done quick )
Also it is almost impossible to remove all the blast media and corrosion dust out of the seams and difficult areas so this can cause rust. Also blasting does not remove all corrosion etc inside the chassis rails, sills etc.

Acid dipping is very hard to wash all the acid out of the seams etc so can eaty through paint and rust from the inside out. Some acid dips are too hot and can warp the body shell too

      Wow!! Not good then....
Off...alot off work to do for me then!
Angle grinder, abrasive materials, time, money and gas mask then!!
I thought that will be an easy way!
      I go to work then!
      Thank You!
      Regards!

have you looked in to soda blasting, it does not break the surface tension of the metal so leaves it smooth, does not damage glass or pit, I had some lambretta parts done and they came out great.

Soda blasting is great for removing paint or cleaning up ally parts but doesn't remove much rust from steel unfortunately.

I had my Escort dipped by SPL, did a superb job, car wasn't that bad anyway but not worth pouring thousands into a shell thats potentially crap.

unless the shell is really bad i would just remove/treat corroded areas, i dont see the purpose of removing the factory body protection, electrocoat, galvanising etc as unless you have the whole thing re coated with the same/similar as the origional it will never have the same level of resitance, manufactures dont spend millions on R&D to get 10 year+ body warrentys for us to remove them! its like all the muppet bodyshops ive seen remove the e-coat from new genuine panels before painting/fitting them, only to etch prime them before painting?!

Thank You for reply's! The story is this! I bought the car 9 years ago.. the car was rolled over. I repaired the roof...etc. The car was allready painted second time. Now, after repair i payed 1500 euro for painting only....after paint took'it to garage to install everything...20V turbo engine, loom windows etc. after 3 months sitting in garage, the paint started to crack all over the car... dont know wy...but looks like the painting was done bad.
Now i need to get rid off those extra layers of paint and filler...i thought that sandblasting will be perfect...but after reading your answers..i doubt that this will be ok. Under the car..is no prob. but the roof and doors i will strip the paint with wire brush and stuff. I have some paint removal liquid...verry agresive...dont know iff i should use that. The wings, bonnet,bumpers...are the sport quattro body kit from Aelred...so those will receive first coat off paint.hope to do a good job now...finding a good painter here is a dificult task they cost alot and do poor job.
                Thank You again for answers!
                All the best!

I'd go the Sodablasting route, friend of mine runs a company and some of the stuff he had turned out is like night and day!

I suspect it will be very difficult to find anywhere that will do this in Romania, but worth a search....

                    Good luck...!

I have searched.....in Romania...no way...just sandblasting using sand, diferent sizes of metal balls and carbonic ice.
So taking in consideration the fact that i will cut 90%of the car
There will be not too much metal to clean....so i will remove the old paint using angle grinder, sandpaper...etc.
                      Off so much work....
                      Thank You!
