    Removable towbar

When i was at audi today i asked them about whether a removeable towbar was made for the S2 coupe.

He checked the computer and said they did, BUT they are £840 for the kit!!!!!!

Nearly fell of the chair when he said that.

Does anyone know where i can source a removable towbar for my S2 Coupe at a more reasonable price?

Reason I want it is so i can get rid of the pug and get a different run around and tow my disco gear with the audi instead. Plenty of torque on that beastie

    cheers

Hi Greg, the only source for towbars to fit Audi Coupes 1988 - 1996 with 4WD are direct from Audi or from a company called Watling. The Audi towbar has lots of mounting points and distributes the 'load' better. The Watling unit is very substantial but I feel may overload the floor area. The watling unit does not have a removeable tow hook. I do not know about the Audi one. There were two towbars offered, £500 ish for a factory fit and as you said £840 ( +VAT) for the after market one.

I have not fitted the watling one yet but must get on with it as I am buying a house and need to sell a practical 4 door hatchback with towbar to use a 2 door coupe Luckily I have a trailer......

I will try to take a snap of it. You will also need to address the autocheck system, because if you connect a trailer direct to the wiring you will set off the bulb check. You need £80 quids worth of gubbins from Audi ( relays etc.) I found a Hella one at a car show for £4 . Still not fitted!

You got it in one mate. Trying to see if i can get another fun car instead of the pug, may be a motorbike engined kit car depending on insurance but would need to get a towbar on audi first.

yeah something like that, I think they way things are going on the towbar front I will have to keep a 'sensible car' but at least that will slow me donw a bit some of the time. I cant afford anymore points at the min.

Can anyone tell me what the max trailer weight that the S2 coupe can tow with a braked trailer? is it just 85% of the weight?

I put a Watling towbar on my evo 5, it was a very poor fit. Took me most of the day to make up spacers to make it fit properly buy they were the only company that made 1. It was a very strong piece of kit but the welded / designer was a monkey.

This is my old van by the way. I did complain to ****ling but they just fecked me off

Hmm, thats the sort of thing I need. Do you know if it is possible to convert a fixed towball one to a removeable type?

If it is a box section type i suppose you can as thats all the Watling tow bar was, a smaller diameter section sildes inside the end you see in the pic then held in place with 2 bolts

Yeh that pic amused me... Evo with pikey wagon

Greg, if you find a cheap answer to this let me know, as i'd also find it very useful to a have a towbar for mine too, the Golf dosent have the power or size for towing some of the things i'd like to and have been asked to.

I had a look at the Brink or the witter site and they do removeable attachments but wether or not u can modify one and keep the EU approval is another matter. I will try and do some more research on it but its difficult enough getting a towbar for the coupe let alone a removeable one!
