    De-locking the doors

Hi Guys, was thinking about delocking the doors on my coupe, not only for improving the look of the car, but also for security reasons.

I've been told that in order to do this all that is needed would be the door handle covers off an Audi 80's rear doors. I went to the local scrapyard, and found the bits I was looking for (although forgot the fact that I also needed tools..!!), so will be going back for them soon.

Could anyone enlighten me on this subject, has anyone done this modification?

    Cheers

You won't be able to use rear door handles as they are smaller at the end where the lock barrel is.

I've delocked mine. To do it I got two front handles and had the holes plated and filled.

I've just run outside and taken a pic for you. Excuse the quality as I was using the fisher price camera . (My new Casio Exilim should be here next week so my photos might improve)

Great topic. I wanted to do that but this is a fine piece of work.

S2avant: With what did you filled the holes? The handles are made of abs plastic, yes?

The handles are plastic. The handle surrounds are metal. AFAIK the bodyshop used a metal plate and body filler to fill the holes in.

The bits with the locks in are die cast alloy, an aluminium plug could be turned on a lathe and then 'welded' in place using Lumi weld or similar.

This will not be prone to cracking.

Since I had my car resprayed I used audi 80/90 rear door handles and the extra space was welded. But filling the front door handle is a much better method.
I chose not to choose life: I chose something else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who need reasons when you've got quattro?

I was considering getting my mate to make some stainless steel blanking plugs and remove the lock altogether.

Probably won't get round to it though!

I too have thought about doing this. But I have once found a very useful need for the lock being there. I once after doing some work on the dog, reconnected the battery with the windows shut and doors shut. Keys were in the ignition and on The clifford auto locks doors when the ignition is on, so i was locked out of the car. Disconnecting battery didnt work, so needed to manually unlock using a key

It's far more fun to clamber in from the hatch back!

That's only a problem for inferior coupe drivers

On the avant the tailgate controls all the locks

I didn't think that the tailgate usually had the lock rermoved. The handy thing is the coupe has a dead lock and is a bit more secure than the dog carrier.

This dog carrier wouldn't get broken into in a hurry though!!
