    Hydraulic pump for softtop problems

When I bought my cabriolet a few years ago there was an issue with the pump for the softtop. It was leaking a bit, so after a refill I could open and close the top a few times untill the fluid level was too low again.

Now I've bought a pump from a forum member over here and installed it, but although it doesn't leak it also won't open the top
The original pump at least tried to open it, but this one does nothing at all besides getting hot.

Below is a picture of the not working pump, the front 6 upright pieces (what would they be called) became very hot when operating the switch inside the car, the rear 2 stayed cold.
Anyone got a clue what could be the cause?

Could it be air in the system because of the pump change?

Well summer is over but I found the problem finally...

There is a small magnet inside the reservoir that blocked the pump's oil intake. So used a tie-wrap to fix it properly so it can't block the pipes anymore. After that I mounted the pump again and tested it about 5 times, maybe more. Everyhting looked fine so I put all the trunk carpets and trim back on to have a cruise in the sun.

...Well as always that was not how it went. Gave the car a quick wash and went to pick up my girlfriend to drive down some nice roads. But hey ho the godd*mn top wouldn't open again to say I was pissed off is an understatement.

A week later I took the carpets out the trunk again and it worked immediately, there must have been a faulty connection somewhere then

One picture is how it should be mounted and the other how it was when I took the reservoir off. The magnet must have become loose during shipping from the UK to me I guess.

            In what car?

Luckily I still got my type 81 80 TD and type 85 CQ to drive

The cabriolet accompanies my 90 quattro type 85 now
