  • Anybody sealed up their sunroof permanently ?

For the potential S2 project in my minds eye I have to get the water leak in the roof fixed. Root cause is the water tray beneath the sliding roof being separated by enough of a gap for water to creep past the drain tube and down towards the top of a pillar. I have tried various sealants and wonder products which have helped but not completely cured it. I am now at the point of trying some DIY special expanding foam in the offending area, closing the roof and throwing away the sunroof relay.

I am more about engines and electronics that bodywork so I am tempted to get a bodywork man to look at it but I fear a big bill to do it properly when a bodge will serve my needs for a lot less expense.

Anybody got some BTDT on this ?

I really have no need for a sunroof where I live. Our allroad doesn't have one and it's not missed at all. My plans for the old machine involve a roll cage for some occasional sport. Is it feasible to swap the roof skin for a non sunroof version - by a professional of course ?

Don't see why you couldn't do that...

If aesthetics aren't too important, then just rivet and PU seal a piece of ally over the hole and paint it, if you can be bothered.

                Should save 10-15kg.

I thought about that option too Rusty - it might look a bit gash though. I am going to find a local bodywork man and see how much money / hassle is involved.

You'll struggle to get it all neat without a lot of effort and I think on a track car, some obvious weight saving looks cool in a functional manner.

You could get a sheet of carbon fibre and do it with that

Mmm - you mean remove the sunroof and fill the hole with alloy sheet and sealer then put a carbon sheet on top of entire roof for a clean looking finish ?

From a body work point of view it would be easier (but more invasive) to do decent job of it by swapping the roof skin as opposed to trying fill the hole and it would look a lot tidier inside.

Paul, Welcome back! Good to see an old problem is still troubling you

If you want to seal the roof whilst you consider other options this is the stuff to use:

                            http://www.homedepot.com/p/Loctite-P...69?N=c5bwZ4ck#

Yes, I know it's a US link because I only know of it over there but perhaps you could find something similar here. I'd open the sunroof a tad, put this all around the seal and then close the roof. You'll have an uneven finish to the glue line but with this stuff as its not silicon and water soluable you can work it for a smooth finish with wet finger and cloth.

It glues better than silicon and would hold the roof on its own. It also goes on white but over the next few days will dry clear so you won't see it - and if and when you want something more permanent you can just clean it off and carry on.

                            John

we did this for a customer recently. Track car Ur S6. we just used a piece of tubing where the gasket used to be and welded to the roof and sunroof panel, plus a bit of body filler to make it all smooth.

                              Came out nice I think.
