    Possible rot area on avant

    Just a heads up.

I removed the rear bumper on the avant today. It was letting the rest of the body work down so it's off to be sprayed.

I noticed some nasty surface corrosion on the lower rear corners of the quarter panels

Any easy fix if you catch it at this stage, it will only get worse if left untreated.

    Worth a check

Ok gave her a wash (any excuse) and scraped off any loose stuff.
Looks like a case of seam sealer hardening and cracking leading to trapped moisture. Good news is there are no holes just surface crud so easy fix.

Rust never sleeps! will be sorted on Sunday

Sorry to be a downer, but inside those vents there is a moisture trap, and the sound deadening gets wet and stays wet.
They are a bit of pain to get to, under the battery box and under the rear wiper washer tank but you might be able to stick your finger in the vent to feel the sound deadening and see if its wet.

                        Good point

I had the vents out earlier and all is bone dry but very dusty! car is garaged so tends to dry out. The vents will be out to do the repair and I do agree they are probably part of the root cause.

I wonder if it would be wise to run some sealer around the top edge of these vents?

                              And so to it!

Bang! and the rust is gone!

Next it's on with the hydrate 80. Brilliant stuff this, chemically converts any remaining rust and because it will activate on clean steel also it makes it a fantastic etch primer.
I used this as the first coat on my mk1.

After about an hour the activation process is complete and the blue colour turns almost black.

A quick flat and on with the stone chip protector. This is the best one I have used, really easy to apply and no solvent pop.

A bit of satin black topcoat to seal it off

                              S2 owners 1, Rust Nil

Also discovered the plastic that the bumper bracket is made out of lends it's self to being welded.

Just need my bumper back from Kully and it's all good.
