    Window Tinting

Hi Guys, who here has their windows tinted and what are your views..?

I'm considering having them done this weekend, got a friend who works proffesionally as a tinter and has offered to do it half price as he will (borrow ) everything from work.

I've decided that it will look better aswell as maybe increasing the security of the car too, what they cant see they cant steal, and also alot harder to actually break the glass once tinted.

Are they any tips that I should let him know about on the day, i.e. removal of the rear quarter windows, I think this maybe tricky.

Any comments or photos appeciated. Also advice on the level of tint.

    Cheers

Depends on if you want them legal, i can't remember if its 15 or 30% tint limit on the side windows. I would keep it legal, 5-O are cracking down on tints and have the tint testers, if it's illegal they'll make you strip it off there and then.

Mind you i live in Birmingham, and we have a little boy racer problems!

Like that ruby red avant with tints that harrassed you at the lights? :mischeif:

Although as Sal said it was cheaper than putting leather in it

Dont tint the front side windows, or u will get problems with the law. U can see a lot of cars driving around with all windows tinted(apart from windscreen). But I heard that they have an anagency in london who stops the cars and measures how much light can go through f/s windows, and if it is not comply with regulations-they stop u using your car.

Dont use any cheap film-it will loose its darkness after 1 year. Use decent like Luminar or 3M tint film.

Regarding security, ordinary tint film will not provide glass breaking properly, this could be done using special films.

Depending of your car colour-chose right shade, brownish, greenish, mirror.

I had my cars rear end tinted of 85% film. If the windows clean from outside, there is very difficult to spot things that laying on the back seat from outside. But its not compromising visability from inside. Even helps at night(rear window)-others cars headlamps dazzle much more less.

The only negative thing-when parking in reverse after sundown-its sometimes hard.

Profesional window "tinter" should be able to make rear quarter windows without removing them-its possible.

Ive got mine tinted on my s2 avant, very happy with it. Its more of a heavy tint than some of the blacked out windows you see. Driving at night, its made no obvious difference to be honest. Audi's are relatively easy to do as all the glass has a black edge anyway, so you dont need to go right to the edge. The worst bit is the rear window on the coupe as its got the curve to it. Also double check with your ins, eleflump for example wont ins with the tinted windows.
Ive got no regrest, but it is definitely one of those things that need to be done right or it looks really crappy.

I'm getting it done for £150, as he would usually charge £270 so I'd imagine this is not the cheap stuff.

With regards to the side windows, I thought the law said that if your windows were tinted before a certain date then they are legal, so its a matter of saying 'I got them done 3 years ago officer'.........hmmm will have to check on this.

My car is a coupe and black so I think black tints will suit it, only light maybe 30% tint I think, the sort that come standard on many new range rovers.

An executive tint rather than a max power tint me thinks...!

                    Hi

It should be somewhere on the net how dark u can get away with side front windows-I think its something in 15% region(not sure), darker-and u have problem with a law.

I had a " pleasure" removing the film from side windows on Polish-German border about 4 years ago. Even that I was going to be in Germany just 4 hours and on autobahns. It didnt persuaded the officers.

But under my opinion-if u want to have less attention from trafic police-leave side front windows as they came from factory.

                    Cheers

No mate, my mates a copper and the law says that the windows must have a 70% minimum luminancy on front side windows
Windscreens on vehicles first registered before April 1985 must let in 70 percent of light to stay legal. That figure changes to 75 percent for vehicles after that date.

my audi v6 had limo black tints and the car was black. Looked well cool, but i managed to collect 50 producer receipts within the yeah. Now my dark blue s2 has light tints and it looks mint! would defo recommend.

I think the general rules says dont make the tints darker than ur car colour.

                        hope this helps.

I dont know how in other countryes laws are, but in Slovenia he have a max of 10% for the passenger and driver windows, and 45% for all other windows (except windshield).

                            Some pics?

I have absolutly no problems driving/parking at night.

One important thing! Pretend to have the glasses removed from the dors, and than tinted! The other windows are no problem, cuz thay have that black stripe all around, but on the doors you wil than have places with no folie and it will look very... ugly...
