    Checking - B3 to B4 front end

I've been through some old threads and just want to check something. If I want to convert my B3 coupe front end to a facelift/B4 coupe front I just need to swap the bonnet, grille, slam panel (3 pieces), headlights and bonnet cable right? Wings don't need to be changed?
Is the B4 coupe bumper the same width as a B3 coupe bumper? I know the 90 saloon's wings aren't as flared so the bumper from a B4 coupe wouldn't fit right. But were the B3 coupe's wings wider? Ideally i'll stick on a V6/S2 bumper at some point too if I go ahead and do the conversion.

    cheers

    Hi
    Bumper
    Bonnet
    Slam panels, side panels
    Headlights
    Grill
    Will all fit no problem

Coupe B3 wings and B4 wings have slightly different wheel arch flare

Bumper ends slightly different, found this out when I tried to help fellow Audi Fan out

I thought they be the same

    Hope this helps

that's great, thanks. When you say slam panels AND side panels do you mean the 2 pieces that go above the headlights and then one T shaped piece between those? Or have I forgotten something?

If the B3 and B4 wings have a different flare then maybe I shouldn't change the bumper? How much of a difference is there? There's probably no point changing the front wings because then the rear wings will be different.

Yeah you need the complete three part slam panel set, the centre bit and the two T shaped pieces with the bonnet catches.

The fit to the wings shouldn't be too much of a problem, I recall doing the cam-belt on a ABY converted B3 quattro (RE2500's car) and the S2 front bumper he'd fitted seem to go back on fine. Worst case scenario you may have to carefully bend the wings a touch, or space out the stay bars as well as alter the wing to bumper mounting holes, but it will work.

Thinking about Alex (Error404) has an S2 bumper on his ABY converted B3 CQ and if recall correctly that looks perfect so it may be worth checking out his project thread or asking him for details.

Well that clears that up, I didn't think it would be a problem and you've confirmed it.

You need to start looking out for some B4 front end parts Noel, preferably in Black.

Thanks lads, that's exactly what I wanted to hear I only began thinking about this because there's a black ABY S2 coupe being broken a couple of hours from me here in Finland.
I'm waiting to hear about prices right now.

John, I'd definitely be up for swapping some panels but postage from Finland to the UK is pretty mental (the other way is more reasonable) so I don't think it would work out that well. What a pisser too because my car's panther black too!

Kit, do you happen to have links for either of the ABY conversions? The guy here is keeping the gearbox, rear diff, hubs etc. The engine would be bloody tempting though if I was daft enough to do a conversion. I'd need the gearbox though and possibly the rear diff too. Actually maybe i'd need everything and I'd be better just keeping the cq20v as it is and buying an s2. yeah. the eternal argument

Noel as already detailed, coupe wings are the same so you need bonnet, lights, grill, light trims, 3x slam panel pieces and bumper, all bolts right on
You will need to swap the headlight connectors as they are different on the facelift lights

So it's only the 80/90 saloon wings that are different... coupes are the same. excellent. thanks matey
Do I need to do the bumper at the same time? I think I can get everything except the bumper from the guy near (ish) me. I thought the bumpers were the same but I could be wrong. Almost forgot the headlight trims though.
I really do want the s2/v6 bumper of course. I have some marks, paint peel and a small crack so obviously the sensible thing to do is change the whole bumper
Thanks for the tip on the headlight connectors. I'll see if I can get those along with the headlights if I go ahead and do this.

Here's Alex's excellent project, this really is the definitive CQ to S2 conversion thread.

There's no serious reason why you'd need to change the 7A gearbox for an ABY engine unless your planning on mental power levels, the ratio's will work well enough. All you'd need to mate it up is your existing 7A flywheel and a 3B clutch. However you'll need everything else that's required to run the engine from the ABY, not just the ECU & engine loom but a host of other componats from under the bonnet as well.

If your doing an engine conversion then you really want the whole car or what's left of it as a donor so can see where everything goes and have all relevant brackets etc, etc, etc.

Don't rule out a 3B, maybe there's an old 200 quattro or tatty early S2 tucked away in a shed or field somewhere near you.

It's an incredible thread, yeah. I think I would have to give up my job, shut down my company and work full time to achieve something like that before I'm a pensioner

That's good to know about the gearbox. But I hear you on the need to get the whole car to be able to transfer the contents of the engine bay. I have to say it seems more sensible to get the car and replace the bits the owner is taking off But then I wouldn't want to use my CQ as a donor... so then I'm basically looking at a totally separate project and money pit

I'll keep an eye out for a potential engine etc donor. Unfortunately there aren't that many people and cars in this country. Also the people tend to be very good at maintaining old cars so there aren't many "bard finds". I should just start visiting old people out in the countryside and asking them if they have an old audis in their barns

Yeah, he's an done an impressive job of the car, I've seem it in the flesh and it's a cracking conversion.

Maybe it would make more sense to bag the remains of the ABY that's close to you and pick up parts for it as and when they come along? Is the shell okay?
