Anyone used SPRAY ON plasti dip?

This year my awful paintwork will be sorted with a respray, it is peeling, crazed and matt in places - prior to my ownership it had paint somewhere in the past and it has not lasted well.

The trims at the bottom of the doors are also not in the best condition and certainly one of them would let the respray down so i was looking at getting replacements.

This is where the plasti-dip idea comes in....

The trims always seem to fail by the steel core rusting, expanding, lumps appear under the rubber and the ends eventually curl away from the door. I have never cut one up but i expect there is a steel strip somewhere in there to give rigidity and form the fine detail of the shape which slides over the plastic clips. You would expect the rubber to protect the steel yet it still rusts.

I have been reading about plasti-dip being flexible, abrasion resistant, impermeable and if used with primer - as permanent as paint.

My idea is that if the door trims were given a couple of coats of the PD, to my mind, that would seal up the source of any ingress of water and solve the relatively short life span of these trims. I'd be willing to bet that the rear quarter and small wing sections don't have steel in them as, has anyone ever seen them rust and fail?

some folk paint their lower trims and someone i know who has done that hasn't seemed to have suffered with failures so i think there must be something in adding a layer of protection.

I'd opt for black, i think it comes with Matt finish as standard but there is also a gloss top coat you can apply.

anyone tried the spray on stuff and if so, what surface was it on and how was it?

    cheers all

      ahh, good to hear.

      Did you prime first?

Plasti-dip seems to trade on it being 'peelable', i don't think i'd want to peel it off but they also say the primer increases adhesion by 400%.

400% more than not very much is still not very much

For me it seems like a good bet on the rubber trims as it is flexible in all directions so should cope with any movement/expansion no matter what it is on.

nope just wiped off the dust/grime on the grills. Masked up the bit I didn't want sprayed and sprayed it on. Need a few coats on it as you will see when you use it but i'd use it again.

I used it on the chrome trim and grill on my A6. Think it looks okay. No chips on the grill and it's been on there for 6months now. Trim at the top of the driver door has worn a bit where the rubber seal touches each time you close the door but think that maybe due to lack of coats

That grill looks great with the plasti dip on, thanks for the photos.

Being right at the front of the car is probably a good test of durability - stones, mud, flies, pedestrians are all the sorts of hazards that could damage the finish and it looks well after 6 months.

It looks matt in the pic, is it completely flat black? I'm looking to spray it on to rubber trims to protect them and if it had a 'rubbery' / slight sheen look about it i would be pretty happy to crack on and order a couple of cans

            cheers

I painted an entire urs6 avant. Ive used small amounts on grills and wheels with decent results. When i painted the whole car it didnt turn out as nicely as i had hoped. While it looked good from 10-15 feet, it looked pretty terrible from up close. Now i have seen others who have done it as well and had better results than i had. But even those werent ideal. Its might be a good temp fix at about 500 bucks when you do it yourself, but i would never consider it for long term or permanent solution

Fair play for giving that project a go! Looks alright that.

From reading FAQ on plasti dip website it says that the solvent is key to the process of painting, you add a layer and once it has gone off, a second layer and subsequent layers on top build up thickness (and smoothness) by dissolving the surface of the layer below. The solvent then evaporates and it all becomes one single slightly thicker layer with each coat.

It also said about using something like 5-6 coats to get a really good finish, but then they would say use more of what they are selling wouldn't they?

I reckon I'm going to give it a go and in 10 years, I'll be back to let you all know if the door trims have rusted up again.

                    Yeah it's flat black

Think I put about 4 or 5 coats of on the grill. The door trims had less which was a mistake as like I said before the drivers door area has begun to wear and need to be peeled off and done again. Anything that has hi wear needs more coats. I have also done the chrome strip along the bottom of the boot and that has lasted well. My dog lives in my car and goes everywhere with me and there is only one small scratch in the plastidip so far.

Looking to do the wheels next!

Not sure about plastickote but the plast dip range includes a 'glossifier'. Add on top to increase sheen. It says you can have more or less sheen depending on how many coats you put on but I imagine that is probably reliant on being even to look good.

Used actual Plastidip on my grille and few months later its still great, no peeling at all
Tried the fake Plastidip before on wheels and bumpers (1969 Mustang) and didn't have that much success as few months later it started to peel off.
Would definitely recommend the original Plastidip though.

That's good to hear! Where did you get it from? It is rumoured that the uk market formulation is different to the US market and may not be quite as 'good'... It sounds plausible as we do like to protect ourselves from dangerous chemicals and the good products they end up producing!
