I got some thick exterior grade adhesive vinyl in satin black and used that as a replacement.
Yes it isn't factory but it does actually look alright if you take your time applying it and it costs pence, wears alright, won't shatter and can be replaced for pence as well. I figured the plastic was there to protect the paint and then thought how much abuse does it actually get? Not much is the answer as my vinyl is still good after a year.
