Wanting to fix an 01E gearbox into my UR Quattro

    Hi All

Later in the year id like to fit a 2.7t with 6 speed gearbox into my ur quattro and im told by another forum member that ill need to buy mounting brackets for the gearbox from another member on here.

Could anyone steer me in the right direction to that person please.

    Thanks

I'm doing the same thing right now. The gearbox sits on the standard subframe no problem. On my other UR (where I fitted an 01E) we used an S2 subframe but you can actaully shim the standard one up on one side to get the 'box straight.

You will need to fabricate your own engine mounts though as the standard ones are useless for this conversion.

so, i know there are a few out there that have done this, but the info is scattered throughout this fine site here, so i figured those who have done it, and those who are planning to do it, could post all their info in here in one place for everyone. my chassis: 1990 90q20v i have a donor 2001...

Just picked up a 81 Euro URQ with 100k miles.. It looks like a good one. Got it in San Diego where it spent a yea after spending it's life in Reno Nevada. The car came with no motor( well just shortblock) which i don't really care about sense it is gonna get the 10v motor of death out of my...

That is a bit more helpful than the b3/b4 thread, as the good majority of the b3/b4 information does not apply to URQ bits. The engine mounts are fine to retain, it is the trans mounts that need to be made from scratch.

A spacer on the front drivers side allows you to use a passenger axle on the drivers, or you can also use a rear drivers side axle. The passenger side can be left as is.

As for linkage, using urS4/s6 linkage bits is the easiest. Use the shift base from the URS to get a reverse lockout, and then put hte urq ball joint on the urS shifter arm. This will allow you to make a bracket to mimic the URQ 016 geometry and get a clean shifting 6 speed. Like this.

The trans is shorter in length than the 016, so you either need to notch your current engine mounts to slide back the needed 11mm, or buy/make a spacer to space the driveshaft forward. Most URQ owners are happy to gain that 11mm of space up front.

You also need to change rear diff, UR diff doesn't match with 01E.

I can assure you that the engine mounts are of no use at all. I had to pretty much cut mine out in the end after trying everything to try and use them.

I've run my track urq with an 01E for about 6 years and I never used a spacer or notched the mounts.

Sorry to disagree, just going on my actual experience of doing these things.

                here's some more.
So.. the ax has fallen and last November I was able to pick up not one, not two but three Ur-q for the price of one. I you use home made mounts, then yes - you don't have to do anything like moving engine back.
I had to do this with 4cyl 5vt engine, 01E with S2 6-gang gearbox mounts because I'm not using engine/gearbox spacer.

They were factory mounts. I'm talking about another urq that I have with a 20vt (so uses standard mounts). There was more than enough play in the propshaft bearings to take up the play.

Damo, you do realize that is my URQ with an 01e in it right? It has 100% oem URQ WR engine mounts in it, unmodified besides taking up the difference in length of the transmissions by scooting the engine back the difference(about 11mm). If I just spaced out the prop shaft with an 11mm spacer, the engine would be 100% in the oem location. We have done this on many cars at our workplace.

My experience is real world as well, in addition to supplying mounts, parts and linkages to over 15 URQ/b2 conversions. All use factory engine mounts with rs2 trans mounts, or replica mounts made by me with a 40mm spacer as used in b3 cars.

You used the oem axles in your conversion? The 01e is physically wider, with most of the width being on the drivers side. If you made do with factory axles, your engine is not even close to the factory location. I am sure you did get it to work, but it is by no means the easiest way to do it.

We are at crossed purposes here. The thread was started by Andrew as he wanted to fit an 01E and a 2.7t into a urq. I am undertaking this project at present and advised Andrew that he wouldn't be able to use the standard chassis engine mounts. You advised him that he could use them but I'm not sure you realised that he was talking about the 2.7t v6 lump?

My other urq (the track car) has a 5 cylinder lump and I retained the standard mounts on that. It was on this car that I didn't space the propshaft (i'm talking about the drive shaft to the rear diff here). For the driveshafts (to the wheels) I used S2 versions and S2 uprights and hubs.

I hope this clears it all up!

Cheers Damo, you are absolutely right. I thought he just needed 01e into an URQ help. Yes, the motor mounts from the v6tt are destined for the trash!

If you guys need help with the v6tt swap, let me know. We have done one and it is currently in the shop getting bigger intercoolers at the moment.

A lot of headache to be perfectly honest. If I were to do it over, I would probably do a single turbo v6 instead of trying to keep the factory manifolds. The v6tt sounds like a great idea because of how short it is, but in reality, it is a pretty long v6 with the accessories attached. Going to an electric PS pump would help a ton. In reality the 2.7tt is about the same length with the accessories as a new 07k 2.5L 5 cylinder out of a Jetta/Golf/TT-RS/RS3. We are doing several of these swaps right now and they look very promising. You have 191cc less displacement, but a much lighter engine in a nose heavy car, far better packaging and the original sound of a 5 cylinder. VVT on the intake will probably get the 2.5L to erase the 191cc displacement advantage. I bet the 5 cylinder head comes close to outflowing the 2.7tt heads as well, despite having 1 less cylinder.

Wow that's fantastic. I have searched high and low for someone who has done this and I always find it is much better to learn from other peoples' mistakes and not your own!

Do you have any more pics?

I have a ton of questions (you will regret saying you could help!):
                              • You used the standard exhaust manifolds? we can't see how they'd fit and clear the steering arms?
                              • I see you've retained the standard inlet. We thought it would be easier to map out the MAF and fit filters on each turbo?
                              • we think that we wil have to fabricate a 3-2-1 manifold either side and mount the turbos up high with the downpipe fitting (just about with a 2.5" pipe) between the cylinder head and the steering arm.

You are right about the illogic of such things as engine swaps like this but that's not why we do them! We do it because (almost!) no one has done it and because it's fun!
