    Mirror heating

As you know, s2 has mirror heating. But my drivers side mirror dosnt de-ice/mist whatever you want to call it while all blowers work fine (even on pass mirror).

is there a leafe stuck in a vent or something?

(god damb i love this forum, its like ask jeeves )

Its nothing to do with the fan / heater. It works when you switch on the rear screen demister. Or is it on all the time? Now I'm confused.
I'm convinced that it has nothing to do with the heater though.

Mine works only when rear screen demister switch is on, as you say Sid.

Ski, might be the plug gone loose, but if electric positioning controles of it work fine, might be the internal resistance broken.

      Paul N., any suggestion?

Ski I guess behind the mirror is placed a very standard heating resistance.
Since all the cables for both mirror moovement and heating come with mirror main wiring, if something was wrong with the connector you should also have the "moovement" not functioning.
But what about a relay or a blown fuse? Does the S2 provide any for mirror heating?

                Ski,

On the mirrors, the *most* common cause of no heating is that the mirror heating element in the glass has just plain burnt out. Our S2 mirrors do indeed work off the HRW switch which means if you forget to turn off the HRW, the mirrors are still heating. It doesn't take much to burn out the heating elements!

Audi finally fixed this 'problem' from 98 onwards, when all the heated mirrors finally had a thermostat built into the back of the mirror glass and would automatically cut the power to the heaters when the glass reached a certain temp to save burning them out to fast.

Pop the glass out of the case (be careful... 50% of the time they will break!) and check to see if a wire has just come of the back of the glass. The position of each wire to the back of the glass does not matter, maybe... a wire is off. I reckon the heating elements have burnt out. If you ever do change them, go for the blindspot mirrors we have for the S2! the blindspot part of the mirror is simply superb to use

Doesn't the HRW work on a timer?
Mine certainly seems to (ABY Avant 94) as I'll push the button on when I drive off and about 10mins later the light has gone off and the heating element is definitely off...as at times, especially today the rear screen is misting up again....

so does mine.. but many times i remember puting it straight back on as rear window still misty/damp... if this car ever saw snow or real ice (in its past owners) in this condition (ages to demist rear window) this must of been switched on all the time

It *should* switch off automatically after 10mins -ish. Certainly does on my COupe - gotta wonder if the Avant is different in this regard for no sane reason ????

Mine switches itself off after a set time. I think the handbook says 15mins.
