My heater is making an awful amount of whining noise when turned on to speeds 1 or 2, goes away at 3 and 4 but is a really awful drone when driving.
Anybody got any ideas?

Its the black trim / duct covering the passenger side windscreen wiper sits in - usually need to take the wiper off too to remove it. Couple of tabs that secures with a large round head in the trim it with a slot in the top to twist them clear with a coin say (odd to describe but you’ll know the ones!) - oh and a rubber seal that runs across the back on the engine compartment lip that it slots into. Once off you can see the top of the blower motor from there from the intake duct, usually protected by a plastic grill.
Alternately it could be that the motor itself has slackened a little from the blower housing (it twists in from underneath) and at low speeds the fan is catching the sides - Ive had this. Need to drop the glove box forward (not necessarily remove it altogether) and possibly the plastic bit of trim behind the back of the glovebox to be able to get underneath and behind to grab the bottom of the blower. Bit fiddly but easy enough!

It will be the bearing running dry.
You should be able to get to it if you remove the pollen filter in the plenum chamber.
Are you free at the weekend? I've got the new vag-com leads now and can take a look at the fan at the same time if you like. Also got those goodies for you
