For those of you with right hand drive wanting to go from standard air-con to climate control as shown in the original S2 Audi brochure but never available in the UK this is what you need (assuming you start with a car that already has air-con fitted)

Centre section of the heater (that's the one with the servo control motors instead of wires to control all the flaps) and dispaly/ecu from a '96 there or thereabouts A4 that had climate control. Bently A4 manual for the wiring diagram.

Dashboard out and change the centre unit over. Add two temperature sensors, one outside, one in the airbox by the heater air filter. Find a way to it an A4 cabin temp. sensor + motor to draw the cabin air over. (I fitted mine at the side of the mid dash row of switches)

Replace the rotary knobs section with the display/ecu

Start wiring as per the A4 wiring diagram..........

The display/ecu surround is available from Audi as fitted to the later lhd cars.

            Good luck!

very interesting to come across this old thread, would it be possible to have this setup but have it without the aircon.

basically on my avant, i'm fed up with wires getting trapped etc and damaging the center dials bit as I had this problem on my 20v plus I prefer the later look of this, if it was possible to swap over to this just for the looks etc then i'd be interested.

Yes it would. The climate control unit has an A/C off (economy) mode and in this mode would be happy working without the A/C parts.

There is another link on the forum with more details on the addition of climate control to a RHD car and Paul has posted the wiring diagrams on S2central so you don't need to rely on Bentley.

The 2 key elements you will need are the central heater unit out of a '96 or so A4 that had climate and and the associated climate control unit. The climate control units come up on the US ebay often enough but the A4 unit is more of a challenge as you need a RHD drive one if your car is RHD. Then there are several sensors that the climate ecu needs in place to operate; 3 x temperature, 1 x sunlight. The climate control unit won't know or care that you don't have a recirculatory facility.

If your car currently doesn't have A/C, I believe the fan motor housing cross tube will still clip onto the A4 central heater unit but haven't proved it. Also, there's an issue over fan speed control. On non climate cars, fan speed is controlled by a resistor pack that is by the fan motor in the fan airstream to cool it. On climate cars this is replaced by an electronic speed control unit, still mounted in the fan air stream for cooling but controlled by the climate control unit. You will need one of these fan speed control units and I don't know if it will fit in a non A/C car resistor pack opening without modification.

The mounting bracket for the climate control unit and the trim surround are available from the Stealers.

All's that left then is a load of wiring................................

If you need anymore help, ask on the forum or PM me.

                John

I know, I arrive 4 years later, but...

Can anyone tell me what bracket did you use to fit center heater section?

I have a LHD S2 3b with old type aircon, and I used the original bracket in my new A3 center section but doesnt match at all....

In my RHD car I used the original bracket and modified the attachment to the heater unit like this

Funny I was looking at this yesterday!
Can I get most of the conversion parts from an early A4 then? CCU, heaterbox, sensors & flap motors and a loom to use as the basis for modification?

                              Yes you can

Me and Pete (acid burn) have just discovered that the heater box/actuators and wiring loom from a VW Passat will also work.

You just need the early A4 CCU with the "H" suffix part number.

                              cheers

What I mean is that my bracket bolts are over the bolt holes. the top bolt should be almost a cm below radiator pipes, and its a cm and a half over them!!!

I think I should lower the bracket some how.

FYI, im using center section from a earlier A3 (LHD), and modded 3b bracket (LHD).
