Can anyone tell me why my heater fan setting only works on number 3?

    weird

Does it work on number four as well? If so then it will be the resitor pack on the blower motor.

If not then it's the switch.

As per ben's reply, If it only works on fast speed it is the resisitor, (common on most cars!!) I have seen switches only work on certain speeds but they tend to get "stuck" on that speed because the switch melts internally. Had it on my Passat Mk2 and my Coupe! A6 ok as climatically controlled!!
A6 Avant Tdi 110 because as the fuel prices keep going up I am so happy to be getting 649.8 miles to a tank of diesel!! (£50)

Seeing that its a four speed fan, then I would say that its not the resistor. I maybe wrong, but they normally fail safe on flat out speed. So check the switch contacts. Without testing the system with a meter, i wouldnt like to point the finger at any one part.
