I have really really got to do something about mine but i'm scared! The previous owner told me that it worked but it has never worked for me and I have left it 2.5 years already.

Steve - u running R12 (or was it running R12)? if so you should see there is a black nipple infront of the aircon rad - unscrew and press the valve very quickly to see if anything escapes if it does then the system is at least holding some residula gas. Also, do you know if the compresser clutch still works, i.e. can you here/feel it click in and out? Normally see some movement in revs and it engages and dis-engages?
The guy I am getting mine done through is based in Basingstoke but is mobile so coming to me... company name is Air Medic, seems a friendly enough guy and seems to have done quite a few RS24 drop ins without problems so we'll see.
Check this link for a local list or if he's good I'll be happy to recommend

Thanks David, I did not know how to check for gas, so will try that. I don't think the clutch is working as the onlything that happens when you press the aircon button is the light comes on
(I am pretty sure its on old R12)
Look forward to hearing on progress, as the AC is certainly something that I would like to be working if I am going to carry all that weight around!
Good luck.

Hey David.... Seeing as i work in basingstoke it'd be rude to pop into to visit these guys one lunch hour, providing they do a good job with your car.. post up and keep us informed
My AC has been disconnected (ie, no belt) - the compressor wheel turns, so it's not siezed, but whether it actually does anything or not I wouldn't know... probably gonna need a replacement

Had a problem with my Aircon a couple of years ago, were it kept cutting in and out, even though it had pressure, turned out that all the sensors(high/low pressure) that mounted on the condensor had corroded. This required a new condensor
But at least I can now chill

well after using the a/c button for the last 4 years only as a manual fan to cool the car after a ragging .................I have aircon again :-)
The compressor wheel was turning but no engagement from the clutch due to there being not any/enough gas in the system. The system managed to hold a low pressure vaccum of 200mb for 30 mins showing that it was at least leak free - I was amazed to say the least!
Bit of oil and some new RS24 gas which is a legal replacement for the old R12 and suddenly the compressor sprang back into life. Apparently if the aicon cuts in and out its quite likely that the system is low on gas - which was what mine was doing at the end - now it just runs properly and cold
The best £65 inc vat i have spent in a long while on the car, now i'm looking fwd to a hot summer.
Air Medic who i used is a mobile one man outfit (Neil) is a great guy and was more than happy to let me stand and nosey at what was being done. If you're local to Basingstoke then I'd recommend him highly!
Cheers

Paul, just pop the black cap off the high pressure port and press the pin down to see if anything is still in the system? sits just infront of the aircon radiator towards the top. Mine had what I thought was gas in it but the guy reckoned it was just compressed air. If there is any residual gas/air in the system then hopefully with a recharge it should cough back into lifesigpic
