Looking into the condenser, this was replaced a year ago by the garage I use - part number TSP0225170, I think this might have been supplied by GS or Camberley Auto Parts. The Audi part no is 8AO 260 403 AC.

Worringly, there is one on sale on ebay and it looks much slimmer than mine - http://tinyurl.com/m6eyo7[/URL]

Have now spoken direct with Camberley and they think the pipe on the front should have come with it so they are now speaking direct with Delphi...watch this space!
I had a look at mine. Both the style and the part number of mine are as the one for sale on ebay, i.e. 8A0 260 401 AC. It isn't particularly thin, it's the cross section of the pipe running through the condensor that's different. On yours it appears to be circular. On mine and the one on ebay has a very oval "racetrack" cross section which is quite substantial. If you were to buy this one it would be fine for your car.

Obviously, if you can get a new pipe from somewhere, that should solve your leak but not why the system cuts out on the red switch. I'm concerned that it sounded as though you had to clean out the restrictor. If that's the case there could be more gunk in your system waiting to block it up again unless you clean out the whole system - not a nice job.

Just in case anyone following this ties up the part number above to my car I should point out that my car (a '96 ABY) didn't come with aircon. The condensor I have with the part number 8A0 260 401AC has the date Sept. '93 on it and came from I know not what S2/RS2.

    John

FYI - that condenser part number posted by johne has been superseded to 8A0260403AC - and shows up against LOTS of aircon application across the B3/B4 family for NG, ABY and RS2 applications only. It is common to LHD and RHD installations as you would expect and is specified for R134a applications only.

          Aircon update

Hi, we have replaced the red switch and now the pump works as it should do and isnt cutting out. The fan wires were the wrong way around (thank you Tom aka Audiman!) for that one - a straight forward undo the nuts switch them over, tighten the nuts! The pipe can't be weld repaired so potentially I am looking at a new OEM condenser that comes with the pipe. So I think we are nearly there! If anyone happens to have spare pipe please let me know!

          Cheers,

          Simon

cannot be welded....seems a bit much to have to buy a new condenser when only the pipe is giving you bother....

The pipe/manifold is not available as a separate item. It comes as part of the condenser, trouble being this car has been fitted with a non OEM condenser and the old part was reused. The alloy is very soft and was split. Welding it was very tricky due to its thin walls, but due to impurities in the metal it gasses during welding and produces porous areas. Not very useful for holding in a gas!
