          Nice one Skull,

Thanks for taking the time to photograph and share.

Presumably it worked much better and no stale smells?

          Kind regards.

                Hi Rusty.

I used the very same stuff on my RS2.

I found it on a company that makes pipes and ducts for air central heating it's not expensive and it works chop chop.
It has also fiberglass net on the sticky side.

The product I used looks like the black tape on page #3 (product code 484 00 01500) on this pdf:

Rocco/Skull correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm updating this thread because I encountered few problems.... and I want to share the experience.

While changing a not very old heater matrix (2009 audi original part) that was blocked on the lower part giving weird almost cold air on my feet I found that:

The foam tape that I used was'nt up to the task.
This foam tape it's used for insulating pipes and it's meant to be cross over on top of each lier while covering the pipe.
Using it on a flat surface like our flaps each stripe side by side gives problems because the material does shrink and peel off because the adhesive in the back it's also not so good.

This leaves you with foam detaching from the flaps and go all over the ducts obstructing them or weird noises due to loosed portion hit by the air blow.

This it's more evident on the hot/cold flap where the air stream (which it's quite consistent) hits the flap on his thinner edge litterally peeling off the foam.
Here a close photo to explain note on the left upper part of the flap that you can see the fiberglass net that was in the back of the foam tape this shows you the shrinking issue:

Perhaps there are better foam tapes without this problem but I quite doubt they'll last very long eventually.

I then went for a solid reliable and durable resolution of the issue:

Bought this adhesive foam of much better quality and at a very convenient price (12 euros for a square meter) the fact that you have a 1mtx1mt sheet of it gives you an easy cutting templating of the flaps with plenty of margin for errors.
The material it's used as sound damper by hi-fi car specialist and it's self adhesive.

To be on the safe side once for all (I hope..) I then decide to not trust the adhesive in the back of the material and to go with a powerful spray adhesive that I found from Wurth which it's meant to be used on foams I can guarantee you that this stuff sticks like hell, I tried after 1 hour to peel off the foam from the flap and no way you could without tearing it apart, which I deed to be safe and then redid the process, I clean perfectly the metal flaps and used some high grade sand paper (80) to give a clean a rough surface to stick the new foam on.

Then further more on the edges of the flaps I got the cloth tape used by Audi on the cable looms and tailored/covered the edges of the flaps.
Again I used thoug the spray adhesive on the back of the cloth tape to have a better grip, again after 1 hour I can tell you that it satys there and there's no way you can peel it off.

Here the box with the renewed flaps.

And by the way... I recall somebody stating that you could get the flaps/motors part of the airbox out from the car leaving the blower and the A/C evap box on situ saving you the hassle of an A/C recharge and pipes (old and rare) disconnection, and yes it's doable but better if you have the ECU box/bracket out previously like I did, I mean you can still get the part out but it's going to be impossible to fit the back clips in the back of the box, again though leaving the boxes connection without a couple of clips it's not a big problem imho.

hope this will be of help.

                    Stefano

In post #17, first picture has a red box near where the fan is located. Is this the fan resistor on the later climate control fan?

I'm trying to find the resistor pack for the earlier digital (Hi/low) climate with two connections. Do you know the part number of yours?
If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.

                      -CQ 3b "S2".

The red box is indeed the fan speed control unit for the later climate units. It's not actually resistor at all like the early climate and non climate speed control units it's electronic. It's also used on later A4s and other Audi cars.

Sorry but I don't know the part number for the early resistor unit.
