  • New a/c compressor fitted

After replacing the dryer, seals and most of the hoses the system held pressure but the compressor was dead.

The search for a new pump went as follows:

    New from Audi £800

Quattro Corner (New Audi OEM) £450

    This place
    http://www.autoairconparts.co.uk/RS_...eceiver_drier/
    £312.50+ Vat (New assume OEM)

Then I found this place 2 miles from my home
    http://www.compressortech.com/sectioned.html

Re-manufactured my pump for £185 all in
Turn around was about 5 days.

Just need to get it gassed now and ill have an ultra rare beast, that being an S2 with working Air con just in time for winter.

    cheers

Would be worth asking them if they can fit a standard R134a low pressure service port on the compressor when they do this - would be make top ups and pressure checks that bit easier !

I see that compressortech has a useful x-ref facility against OE part numbers...

e.g the R134 compressor from an S2/RS2 = 8A0260805AF which lands on their reference CA10239

Interestingly they don't seem to list an R12 compressor, but I bet if you asked nicely that it could done and made ready for R134 into the bargain.

Both types are made by Zexel.

Superb find that. Thats on my list for pre Crimbo repairs. Might even get my mechanic to take it off now while "she" is in dry dock awaiting gearbox return from rebuild. Thanks again Scotty.

              Scotty nice one.

Agree with above comment, except inset "me" for "mechanic" changing gearbox also as well as timing belt and a load of other things as I'm at it.

If anyone else has "finds" like this, please share as there is some difference in first cost and last cost.

              Kind regards.

                  First Time I've gone sticky

If your compressor has been on the car for 15+ years the pipe unions corrode so badly they are almost impossible to remove, the two alloys of the pipe and the compressor housing really don't get on. I managed to snap the discharge hose connection clean off, this was after heating it with a MAPP torch and I had to get a second pump just to rob the rear manifold off it (cheers spink ).
If I was doing this again I would bite the bullet and buy the two hoses that connect to the compressor before hand. The existing hoses can then be cut off instead of unscrewed.

Apparently the pump is very common to the VW/Audi range, even today but the manifold is unique to our cars and few of its variants.

Also £185 was a "walk in" price but I'm sure it won't be much more via mail order.

And just for the record I have no affiliation with this company. I found them by driving past them by accident

                  cheers

I suspect that Zexel pump is indeed very common... S2/RS2 gets a variant without the compressor speed signal and an oddball pulley compared to other models. Great find Rich !

                      Update !

System is now gassed up and freezing cold
They gassed it up using the high pressure port for £40

I can give compressor tech an A1 rating

Does anyone have the pipe attachment fiitting dimensions for the compressor end of this set up?

i.e. the diameter of the nut nut and thread coarsity figures?

                          Much appreciated

I'm also getting a custom pipe made up hence the need for the technical data....this is all a bit over my head to be honest

                              Corrosion issues

How did they cope with the corroded union ?, Was it a new rear casing that they used ?, Mine was the same when last removed, new one has liberal amounts of rocol asp on the threads and denso to try and stop the salt water in the winter

Top pipe between dryer and exchanger also has a tendancy to corrode at the top near the inner wing, anyone else find this ?
