More specifically, the thermal fuse on the resistor pack has blown.

Replace the resistor pack or just replace the thermal fuse yourself on the resistor pack with one from somewhere like Mapin. Cost is approx. ÂŁ1.

Whichever, make sure you lubricate the fan motor whilst you're at it or you'll just blow the replacement pack.

Easy enough to replace, behind the glovebox on the passanger side, on top of the blower box. Multi plug goes into it, and the resistor pack itself is clipped to the top of the blower box.

Looks like this, but clipped green side down onto the blower box

Its easy to do if you unbolt the glove box, but I am sure the last 2 I did I replaced through the glovebox with it open, once I knew where it was.

Replacing the thermal fuse is a good shout. A quid at maplin and two mins with a soldering iron and sit there smug with your cheap fix.

Yes but you'll loose that smug smile if you're too enthusiastic with the soldering iron - don't forget that it's a thermal fuse so if you get it too hot whilst soldering it's useless................

Either keep the leads of the thermal fuse long and clamp with pliers between the fuse and where you solder or use a mechanical electrical connection like a chocolate block so there's no heat involved.

Make sure you got the correct one. Non A/C are different then A/C resistor packs IIRC.

You should be able to do it in about 30 minutes...just remove the glove compartment to give full access to the motor fan, and as Johne says, make sure you lubricate fan when reinstalling.

Hi everyone. Ive got the same problem as the thread-starter. I wonder if there is any difference between the resistors on it with AC and without? Is it the same part number on both or what? I have AC and have 447959493b part of my resistance, Found 2 persons on ebay selling those with the part number, do I just have to order it?

There were many questions, but am grateful for answers

I got a Meyle one for me, according to their site the A/C and non A/C versions are not the same. Anyway the one I ordered for my car with A/C (not climate control) fitted and works fine. Can get you a partnumber if you want.

The resistor packs are different for A/C and non A/C fan motors but the thermal fuse is the same. That's because the fan motors themselves are different, the A/C one being much bigger.

If anyone has A/C and electronic climate control, then the resistor pack is replaced by an electronic fan speed control unit in the same place as where the resistor pack is fitted.

I got one of these from AudiBits2 for my non-aircon 94 Coupe. You say it just clips in, is that right? I've yet to fit mine but looked like it needed to be screwed on. Also, probably a stupid question but do I need to disconnect the battery first?

                              Cheers
