    a/c rattle.

Ive had this intermitent rattle on my car for a while now,it comes and goes for no obvious reason and does me heed in .Anyway enough of my whinging, got the car back from my local specialist who had it for 8hrs and typicaly it never ratted once, but he did say it could well be the clutch[ ] on the a/c which is rattling.Without taking the front end off and giving it a thorough check[and me a big bill]he said this was the most likely cause of this noise.Has anyone had a similar problem or experiance,is it a big -expensive job or is there an easy remedy.cheers in advance for any info.

could be two things. either a busted clutch like your mechanic suggested or nasty bearings in the compressor itself.

don't see why it'd be such a headache to check: pop off the belly pan, remove the veebelt and check for play or general age related problems....not rocket science and with a lift, certainly not a knuckle buster. your mechanic may be trying to feed you BS cuz he doesn't want to think much

Hi slim, i had this before too. is turned out to be the clutch bearings on the compressor. mine was like that for about 2 years then seized one day wrecking the compressor!
audi will sell you a new clutch/pulley/coil assembly for about £300, but if you get it before any serious damage has occured you can actually replace the bearings themselves! You can buy the bearings (2 as opposed to 1 big double one as original) from bearing services ltd for about £30!!
You will have to make up a puller for the pulley but its faily straightforward (in S2 terms!!) you wont lose any gas as you can do it in situ. The original bearing is crimped in.
dont leave it too long tho!
      cheers,
      Simon
