    3B aircon questions

well, this summer is my first togheter with the S2, and my first with a car with aircon.

I've got the electronic climate control but the air is not as cold as i've expected.

Seems that the lowest temp. ive gotten from the vent in the center display, is around 14-15 degrees C on a hot with 22-24 outside, car sitting at idle in the sun. It is enough to keep the interior at a comfortable temperature, but not really cold.

I took a look at the A/C compressor, and it does kick in, but only 20-30 seconds at a time. Then it kicks out for 20-30 seconds and so on. Can even hear the engine changing revs when the A/C compressor kicks in.

So my question, is this normal for the A/C compressor to operate at these intervals, and should my inlet temperature to the interior be colder, and if so, what is the solution to my problem.

Refill of the A/C system perhaps?

Take it to a specialist - it sounds like low system pressure to me. A 3B system runs on R12 which is no longer available. An AC specialist will check your system for leaks and charge up with a compatible gas.

If your AC hasn't been serviced much, then you might also need a new orifice tube and filter/drier.

Be ABSOLUTELY sure that your AC specialist has the right gas and system lubricant that is compatible with your R12 system. If they wrong gas or lubricant is used then you can be looking at very expensive repair bills.

I have the factory info for that system at home - I'll dig out the temperature info if yo like.

Sounds like you might be low on aircon coolant - I have the same problem with my (inferior UK-spec not climate control) aircon, and it's because I have a small leak somewhere in the system.

aircon coolant, is this the oil used to cool the compressor, or the R12 freon?

is it possible to top up the oil, or is that best left with an service engineer?

The coolant is mixed with the oil and both circulate under the system pressure. I would seriously recommend taking it to a proper aircon service engineer, especially as your system will still have the old R12 in it.

Oil top up can only be done by AC specialist... And the oil MUST be R12 compatible.

I measured around 7C when ambient was around 24C.

                  You're low on refridgerant.

Oil is used to lubricate the compressor.

You need the specialist, but not necessarily a car AC specialist. The other ones (home/industrial) ones tend to be 5 times cheaper. Atleast over here.

ok, think the car will go to a AC specialist when time (money ) comes around.

Problem is, that i think that R12 is no longer available in Denmark where i live, but only R134 which i understand eats away all the sealings in the system

But will have to check into that.

Thanx for all the help guys

R12 is NLA - but ozone friendly compatible alternatives ARE available - certainly in UK anyway. Try not to get fished into a specialist trying to force an R134 'upgrade'.
