  • NG coupe surging/suspected air/vacuum leak

Evening all, any help appreciated ...

Just got my baby on the road, had a decent 20 mile round journey to give her a good run during the day. Got home, switched her off for 5, got back in and took the mrs for a quick run no problems, got back shut her back off again and left it for an hour or so. Went to make a other journey and she didn't really wanna run at first, struggled to pick up the revs, wouldnt hold any revs and was trying to conk out. After 5-10 of pissing about she warmed up and smoothed out nicely, for a few weeks I've been suspecting an air leak as once the car has warmed up, on idle the engine surges down and back up every 3-5 seconds religiously, and then suddenly stops. Hadn't really bothered me but as I was sat in a car park I realised a pattern forming ... The surging stopped, but .. As soon as I pushed the clutch down the surging would start again, every 3-5 seconds ... I came off the clutch and the surging stopped ... Back on the clutch it started again ... And so on and so forth. Along with this at first when the car was cold but progressively more and more often I'm Getting this high pitched whistling noise. Initial I thought it was a sweeping pulley but, the noise doesn't change under load or rev increase. Im sure it's a whislting of some sort.

Basically which hoses could cause a bad cold start cycle if they had a split ? Has anyone got a schematic of all the various hoses that could be effecting the engine and does anyone know whether any of this could be related to the break or clutch servo (with the wired clutch surging thing). Sorry for the jumbled and vague description but I don't really know how else to explain it

    Cheers guys

Check the rubber hose that connects to the ISV.

This would be my plan of attack

check the idle swich on the throttle body
replace all the cotton overbraided vac hoses
check the intake hose and ISV hoses for splits as Rob suggested
thoroughly clean out the ISV with carb cleaner and relube it with some GT85

        Indigo ABY coupé

Hi mate thanks for the reply, pardon my ignorance but what is / where is this idle switch on the throttle body ? And where abouts are the above mentioned hoses ? I really don't have a clue to be honest. And the ISV Has already been cleaned with wd-40, I didn't re-lube though ? Could this have been an issue ? (wd-40)

          Thanks

anyone ? I took it to a supposed " audi vw specialist " and not kidding all he told me to do was "unplug the coldstart injector and see what it starts like from cold", i mentioned about the surging told him all the symptoms, and he spent nearly 90 minutes just looking, and at the end told me "unplug the 6th injector and see what it does" he then charged me £65.

Well , i started it from cold thismorning, with this cold start injector unplugged and it made no difference ... I am REALLY struggling here, i cant find any air leaks, i have no way of testing sensors etc. and ive cleaned the ISV again thoroughly. helpp meeeeeee !
