  • Exhaust manifold washers thickness

    Hi
    Just curious:
Why is the ex. manifold washers so thick?
    4mm i think.
I bought a set of new ones for my Wagner SPQ manifold on the engine that I'm installing now along with some other goodies..

Does anyone know the answer on this? I'm actually curious to. On the wagner exhaust manifolds it would be intresting (install wise) to use thinner washer and also shorter studs. It's easier to fit a combination spanner.

Just use copper nuts without any washers. You can go with minimal length on studs that way.

        Bad idea.
You need washers to spread the load and generate correct torque & stretch on the studs. The washers are thicker to resist deformation under extreme temperature. 3mm thickness is adequate.

In this case stainless washers would be better I believe?

            321 stainless is ideal.

thanks for the reactions. Now I know the thickness is for a purpose. I think I'll look for the stainless one.
