    Please help - Door pannel

    Hi guys,

I could really do with your help on this one.

I changed my window regulator frame in the door pannel. After doing so the motor bust so im awaiting a new one. This isnt the problem.

The problem is after re-installing new frame there is a 2cm gap between the bottom of the window and the external door seal.

There are two adjustments, one is how high you want the window to go, the other is at what angle you want the window. I cannot find any adjustments to how far the window should be from the outside of the door. Hard to explain without pics but if you read carefully you should understand my problem.

Can anyone shine a little light on this please? im stuck

Hmm. I've done this job before and I understand what you are asking. Could you take a pic of the frame - this might help me see what is wrong.

At this point my best guess is the motor/regulator assembly isn't mounted correctly and is obstructing the frame.

    Hmmm.

3 nuts are securing the motor/regulator to the frame correctly and that isnt obstructing. Infact, i looked over the whole door, and nothing is obstructing. its just when its fully tightened the gap is there. I just dont get it

to put it another way, all 6 main bolts for the frame tighten up firmly, all markings from old frame match. its on properly. but the big gap exits. more to the end of the door than the front (front = where mirror is).

Okay, Are the spacers at the bottom of the frame assembly in place to bring the top of the frame outwards? The spacers are sort of U-shaped pieces of metal.

I found a write up on the web with pictures AFTER I had done this job. I can't seem to find it again. I'll have another look see.

the spacers alter the position of the top of the window. i have a gap at the bottom of the window

IS the frame you bought brand new?

I did the same job a while back and seem to remember having a similar problem. IIRC, it's the window clamping assembly that dictates the throw-out position of the glass:

Check is the cast window 'carriers' are seated correctly on their corresponding runners- (the front one is different to the one at the lock-end of the door, see: http://home.comcast.net/~absolutcq20...ech/glass7.jpg but think: handed). Also double-check to see if the the clamping plates and glass itself are mated properly to them with the urethane insert in between.

Also, two of the bolts that hold the frame to the door are longer than the others. IIRC, these fix into the upper part of the window frame.

Apologies if I'm way off the mark...

I should probably have asked this at the start; despite the 2cm gap does the window move freely up and down to the limits and without any strange noises? It's been about two years ago since I did it. Not a nice job.

Cochyn92 has provided some good advice, you should really be able to see the problem yourself if you look closely enough and think about how it all works together.

NOTE: I don't think the window clamping assembly governs the throw-out position of the glass, the clamps should be flush against the glass and parallel to it. If incorrectly fitted, this will cause the glass to sit lop-sided to the frame.

Dirt is you friend - use it. I used the marks created by years of grime to act as my reference markers when reassembling everything.

                      Hey thanx for your reply!!!

"urethane insert in between." these are white plastic style plates right? yes they have been inserted.

Screws/nuts are in the same place as i marked them before taking apart.

window is fitted correctly to the frame and the old marks on the window allign up to the new frame so this proves its in the exact same position as previous.

The frame came from VAG parts brand new.

Many thanx to all your replys and effort into your detailed posts, im hoping someone will mentioned something ive not tried yet

                      keep em coming!!

I cant test if the window moves as my motor died half way through this job

Yes i used the dirt trick

I inspected this door a long time and have sussed it all out. In my eyes , when the frame mounts to the door, its too far out, hence the gap. The only way i see it being fixed if I hammer the bit the frame screws into on the lock side inwards, that may help, but i dont want to start bending my door because a part dosnt fit.

A long shot, but maybe you have the wrong regulator?

I know there are a couple of regulator frames dependant on you chassis number. AFAIK you should have 895 837 398 C for VINs starting at 8B-M-008 401.

                          The earlier version is 895 837 398 A for VINs upto 8B-M-008 400.
                          What have you got there?

Have you visually compared old with new?

Old and new look identical. I have a 1995/6 coupe so it should be the "895 837 398 C for VINs starting at 8B-M-008 401" I will double check this tonight.

Also I will post some piccies up.

I can confirm that the part number is correct and the old frame looks identical.
