    Different Clocks.......

Does anyone know what size the actual clocks are in the S2 compared to say a new S4 for example?

As the clocks come out separate, i was wondering if its possible to change the actual clocks in to the S2 cluster panel??

Anyone any thoughts on if its possible if you happend to have a set of S4 clocks to do it with, or similar.

Was thinking these would look great in the car if the clocks fit the same place the current ones do.

That's something I'm looking into. I'm trying to get hold of a set of A4 clocks to try out. There are supposed to be a scrap set at work but I haven't got my mits on them yet.

I've been thinking about that door open warning you've got shown in your picture. It would be difficult to get that working as it gets it's signal from the convenience controller (which S2's don't have)

I'll let you know more if I can find them. Might make it my christmas project this week(instead of doing any real work )

Forget it guys, I've had quite a few A4/S4 dash pods apart over the years and there is no way it'll work.

...Plus the S4 clock's use digital signals, as opposed to the S2's analogue ones. I have a set here, and believe me, they won't work. S4 and all later B5 A4's use a unique pod - you can't even replace the bulbs, as they are soldered in, pretty similar to the keypad of a cellphone.

A nice, easier upgrade will be the clocks from a 1999 Audi Cabriolet. You'll have to get white faces for them though, but it's more up to date, with a digital display for trip and odometer in red.

Surley you'd have to have everything calibrated for the 5 Cyl ? rev counter, speedo etc....

Can someone else clarify something then for me..... the speedo gets its reading from where?

Reason i ask is because Jeff for starters has an S4 gearbox installed, my understanding was the speedo gets an electronic reading from the gearbox, so if these clocks wouldnt work.... how does Jeffers speedo work?

It's a seperate sensor on the gearbox, so Jeff would have used the S2 sensor.

Ant, the issue is not the speedo signal, it's the rest of the signals you have to worry about and how they're converted.

                    Ah ok, thanks

Shame cos would have looked good with that rev counter and speedo fitted. I assume people understood what i meant and fit those clocks in to the S2 cluster, so the centre part is still the S2 part, just change the 4 clocks out.

Oh well, back to the drawing board lol

                          Me neither.

Assuming it was possible to convert stuff to work on the new S4 clocks, what would need to be done / changed, in theory.

Its bugging me that if the clocks themselves fit the holes in the cluster, its only wiring after that and i have some v knowledgable and skilled people when it comes to things like that, including some dealership contacts with access to everything the dealer has to make things work.

...Apart from the central electronics system. Would need almost the complete S4 wiring harness and central electronic module.

It depends what model year clocks you go for as to how difficult a conversion would be. The clocks from the later B6 cars (as per Ant's photo) would indeed need major surgery to fit them as they use all manner of exotic signals etc including the CAN system.

I'm thinking more along the lines of the older B5/GP model clocks (I've been digging around the exchange parts bin at work and found an old set of RS4 clocks with the 200MPH speedo) which had the simpler wiring system. Obviously it will still need some hefty wiring changes but without all the extra complexity of the B6 cars.
