On my RS2 the top of the gear-knob is cracked and the lettering for 1,2,3,4,5,6 and R has faded. I would love to replace it.. but I was under the impression that the knob and gaitor are one piece (i.e you can't just twist the knob off and replace it).
Is that true?.. How difficult and potentially expensive is it to replace?
Remove the knob by simply unscrewing it. I have a solid Titanium gear knob from the USA, but I know that www.vagparts.com have a selection of genuine 6 speed gear knobs from newer Audis at cheap prices. Martyn has one fitted and it looks really good. Vagparts will sell you one!

Hmmm. It certainly is different to mine! Is that the original RS2 style? I guess you would need to release the leather gaiter at the bottom before unscrwing the knob. Surely, an S2 leather gaiter and new knob will fit. I have the same gearbox as you and the interior plastic trim mouldings are also the same.

Yes the RS2 has a one piece gaitor and knob combined, that was unique to the RS2. The part no. is 8A0 711 118 A and is listed at £118.65 + vat.
That does look steep but then the price for the gaitor alone for an S2, part no. 893 711 110 A 9UB, is £117.60 + vat and then you still have to buy the knob, part no. 4A0 711 141 AB 9UB, at £33.60 + vat.
Of course the gaitor never wears out - just the knob.
The answer could be to very carefully cut off your knob :eek2: - sorry I mean cut the gaitor just below the gearknob section. You could then possibly turn the top back in on itself securing it to the actual gearstick rod with a cable tie. This would invole releasing the bottom securing fittings of the gaitor, turning it inside out so it is now above the top of the gearstick, securing the top end with the cable tie, and the turning it back in the right way and fixing the bottom of the gaitor again (not sure if I explained that too well, but if you think about it you will probably see what I mean). You would then be free to use any of the gearknobs that Martyn sells at VAGParts:
