    Cheers,
I believe a screwdrive under the top edge and some leverage will remove it but I have never had to take it off to remove the console.....a bit of gentle persuasion and some twisting and the console will pull over it

      Cheers,
      Hi there,

I actually need to know this as I plan to replace my handbrake trim, but in your case, there is no need. The centre console will come off with the handbrake trim in place. I have done this many times in the last 10 years of Audi Coupe and S2 ownership.

      - Remove the 13mm bolt under the rear ash tray.
      - Remove the trim panel and 8mm screw in front of the handbrake button.
      - Lift the handbrake to its absolute highest position and put the car in first gear.
      - Lift the console up until it catches on the handbrake trim.
      - Now the pull the console sideways (to widen the slot) and with a flatblade screwdriver/palette knife etc, ease the edge of the handbrake trim into the console slot.
      - Repeat on the other side.
      - Once over the lip of the trim, slide the console forwards as you lift (hence the first gear) as the wiring for the diff lock and ligher socket is quite short.

The trim is only a few mm wider than the console slot so believe me, this does work. replacing is much easier

      Cheers n

if you need to take the gear stick gator off theres a screw where the little panal u have just removed.then it comes off,if you need to take the front ash tray n gauges out u need to remove the heater controls then unscrew the black lip across the top then the centre comes off,do it slowly as the clips on the gearbox tunnel might brake, that it slids on to

Just do what Si and S2dude say mate, leave it on and take the centre console over the top of it. Far easier.
I posted those pictures for Si, the pictures make the job look very easy, but it's far from easy when you try and do it.

you can take out the center console without removing the handbrake cover. just pull the handbrake as hight as you can, and then lift the console off. it is tight, but nothin is gonna crack. done it plenty of times.

Just requires a bit of jiggling but perfectly possible - Ive just done that yesterday as my whole dash is on the way out to sort my lack of heat problems. Loosen the 13mm as described, and the 8mm one that holds the 2 peices together under that little bit of trim beside the gear stick gaiter, the middle part should slide a good few inches back over the transmission tunnel in the rear with sufficient movement at the handbrake, then wiggle the centre consol free.

Word of caution! You have removed the little flat trim peice that sits on the top of the VDO's? If you dont you'll break the lugs on the centre consol either side of the VDO's trying to force it off and you'll have the classic saggy centre column (like mine which I'll fix as its removed). Need to pull the blower knobs off, take the cover off then you'll see the 2 retaining screws for this bit of trim. ALso look out for the wiring connector to the cigarette lighter and the main plug for the VDO's which is shoved right under the centre consol.

                  Cheers
